WASHINGTON– The United States transferred six detainees from the Guantánamo Bay prison to Uruguay this weekend, the Defense Department announced early Sunday. It was the largest single group of inmates to depart the wartime prison in Cuba since 2009, and the first detainees to be resettled in South America.The transfer included a Syrian man who has been on a prolonged hunger strike to protest his indefinite detention without trial, and who has brought a high-profile lawsuit to challenge the military’s procedures for force-feeding him. His release may moot most of that case, although a dispute over whether videotapes of the procedure must be disclosed to the public is expected to continue.

The U.S. has a lot to gain from a good relationship with President Mujica.

I STUDIED URAGUAY last year, and although a socialist country, they had the least Muslim population I could find for a nation at that time, although some small islands around the world may have less.

True, and I have studied so many places in past few years to find out why people are retiring outside of the USA, as an alternative myself. I would not go to any of those places because costs are rising along with our own inflation. In fact, places that were cheap five years ago are as expensive as here now.
And as you say, Islam is on the rise. Think how quickly things could change there. For instance, I prayed for years in early 80s for the dictator Noriega to be arrested and never get out of prison. He was. However, corruption still exists and you never know how quickly these nations could return to similar situations...they are unpredictable. Uruguay was stable, and doing this will destabilize and change them...an open door to Islam.
After the US has forgotten where they are.
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Uruguayan President Jose Mujica confirmed Friday his country will take six Guantanamo prisoners who have not been charged with any crimes.
Mujica says Guantanamo is not a prison but a "nest of kidnapping," as he believes the six prisoners in question should have been charged with a crime and put before a court.
Mujica offered to take the prisoners in March. He was once a prisoner himself for over a decade, having been a captured Guerrilla army leader in the 1970s, and he sympathizes with prisoners facing what he sees as injustice.
It has been reported the prisoners will likely arrive on Tuesday, but Mujica has not confirmed their arrival date.
Over 172 Guantanamo prisoners have been cleared for a transfer but have not yet been moved.
Mujica is well known for his decision to legalize marijuana in the country and his liberal views on gay marriage and abortion. He will be succeeded by recently re-elected former President Tabare Vazquez, who is a politician of the same political party.

Both sandwich a valle that is so much like the San Juaquin Valley, The Bay Area and other California.
Rich in agriculture, seafoods and a decent diversity of people from around the globe.
The climate? Oh,ho,ho,ho!!! California here we come. It’s practically the same.
The region around Santiago is phenomenal!!!
Much like the weather in San Jose, California.
The churches? Unbelievable! They are gorgeous and many are colorful, taking on some of the charm and practices of the indigenous peoples.
I love the place and could, if I ever thought about it, retire there “no problemo”.
Forgot the women. They are stunning, as are the many women who visit from other countries in South America.
And it has to be said “ They are crazy about handsome, blue eyed Americans.
One bone of contention: “They party way too freakin late”.
They don’t start showing up to bars until well after midnight. In Murica, thatz typical Fugly time. But, if you don’t have anything to do the next day, well worth the inconvenience.
Lastly, I hate eating after 6pm and these chumps will eat a full meal at 8,9, 10 o’clock and later!
Oh well. Can’t have it all.
SAD that this old man has run farther left....the unintended consequences of Mulim immigrants will ruin what was a good country except for the socialism, which wasn’t as bad as Europe until past few years.
