Researchers have found that playing a single season of football can change the brain of a teenager - even if they don't suffer concussions.
Even though players were not concussed during the season, researchers found abnormalities similar to the effects of mild traumatic brain injury.
They called for more research into the area, which raises new questions over the safety of contact sports for young adults.

President Regan was ahead of these guys 40 years ago, using Gerald Ford as an example. Although he did suggest that Ford played for Michigan without a helmet.

I'm not going to pretend there is anything smart about playing a game in which smashing your head repeatedly in an integral element.
If that makes me an elitist, well, so be it.

Despite the fact that we get more head concussions in soccer due to all those headers? Or the innumerable injuries from bodychecking in ice hockey?

There are some...on both he left and right...who are trying to make this a social.political problem, one to be solved by politicians or something that's not a problem at all.
Having worked in clinical, and academic, medicine as well as having worked for a neuropathologist on the staff of a world famous hospital I say that this is a matter to be addressed by physicians, surgeons and medical researchers.Football, hockey, baseball, boxing and/or other sports/activities either do,or do not, represent a special danger to participants.
Those on both sides of the argument should wait for guidance on this subject from qualified medical practitioners.
