A union operative generously praised New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman when he announced he was taking a Papa Johns pizza franchisee to court on behalf of workers who claim they were underpaid. The state attorney general, like the unions, called it wage theft.
The thing is, the union official knew about the governments lawsuit before the pizza franchise did.
Fast-food workers all across the city and country are organizing for higher pay and union rights, said Kendall Fells, organizing director for Fast Food Forward, a group dedicated to increasing wages and benefits for fast-food workers. Fells added:
"This suit shows why their campaign is so important. And it shows that Attorney General Schneiderman is serious about holding fast-food companies accountable for wage theft."
Fells comments came in a press release from Schneidermans office announcing the lawsuit.
That means Fells, also on the payroll of the Service Employees International Union, knew New Yorks attorney general was going after the Papa Johns franchisee before its owner, Ronald Johnson, did.
The suit, filed Oct. 16 in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan, seeks more than $2 million for more than 400 delivery workers in restitution, damages and interest from New Majority Holdings LLC, operator of five Papa Johns restaurants in Manhattan.
To some, this smacks of cronyism and calls into question the nature of the relationship between government officials such as Schneiderman, a Democrat who took office in 2011, and worker centers such as Fast Food Forward that are backed by the Service Employees International Union, or SEIU.

Why is this relationship surprising? It’s common knowledge that the unions and the Democrats have been in bed together for years.
Papa John’s should just close down their locations in New York. I’m sure they can thrive in states that don’t have this nonsense.
Isnt papa john owned by a Conservative?
The proggs have coined another new term. “Wage theft”. I guess we will hear this ad nauseum on all of the lefties shows & news broadcasts.
I’m not sure where John Schnatter’s political leanings lie.
legalized extortion
Although he did desparage the ACA.
Papa Johns should call the other pizza companies, form a pact, and pull out of New York simultaneously and entirely.
He held a fundraiser for Romney,too...

re: In March 2013, Schneiderman reached a settlement with six Dominos Pizza franchises for not paying minimum wage, overtime or vehicle expense reimbursements to drivers and also extracted $500,000 for mostly minimum-wage workers at McDonalds restaurants operated by the Cisneros Group.

I do not know if this particular case was extortion. But if the franchises did not pay minimum wage, overtime, and vehicle expense reimbursements as charged and as the law required, shame on them. I support business in the battle against the evil union thugs, but I want our side to be accountable if they are abusing employees. Let’s fight the battle without giving them ammunition.
"Wage theft," huh?
Well, just call me Mister Crimestopper.
You're fired.
What is this, a gang shakedown? Oh, it just the unions again.
What is this, a gang shakedown? Oh, it’s just the unions again.
Ugh.
Leftists ought to be executed.
Yes, I totally said that. They are the modern-day wannabe slavemasters, dressed up in the “Collective.”
Evil, all of them.
After they get every thing shut down to where half of the people are rummaging in garbage cans trying to find something to eat they will still blame it on to the other side.
And the mentality retarded ones in Government are taking them serious.
Easy, close down all Papa John’s in NY.
Unions = Detroit
Papa Johns should just close down their locations in New York.
I despise actual ‘wage theft’, but this smacks of extortion. Thanks.
Papa Johns should call the other pizza companies, form a pact, and pull out of New York simultaneously and entirely.
Respectfully, that sounds like a good idea, except anti trust laws would, at the very least, cause them to be fined out of business, with a possible prison term, thrown in.
It is no joke, in the airports, it used to be if two separate corporation bosses accidentally ran into each other, they would immediately head in opposite directions, lest there be an accusation of collusion. Thanks
