Just got back from Foxcatcher and yes I'm a moviholic.
Big build up for the three lead actors (Carrell, Tatum, and Ruffalo). If your comment is Who dat? You probably clicked onto the wrong thread. Save us all some time.
Possible support nomination for Ruffalo and Tatum as the Schultz brothers, probably the two best known and influential collegiate and US Olympic wrestlers.
Carrell plays John E. du Pont in a tour de force. Possiblly best actor nom. If you're used to the comic actor, the Office, 40 year old virgin etc., you may be very surprised at how well he does in this turn in a serious drama.
Vanessa Redgrave (I know, save your time) plays John du Pont's mother. She's only on camera about 4 times and has few lines, so that's a break for some of you; but you can feel her presence throughout the movie as it informs (gratitutious liberal artsy word) Carrell's behavior throughout the movie.
The movie takes place on an estate used as the film setting. I have been to the original du Pont estate outside Wilmington, Delaware. This one is in Penn near Valley Forge. Couple of good shots of VF if you haven't been there. Worth a trip if you're near the place, VF and Delaware. The estate is like a character in the film and it illustrates the lonely life of this very wealthy guy who became obsessed with Olympic wrestling and the Schultz brothers.
on my list
I have to go to Irvine, Laguna Niguel or La Jolla to catch indies. O-side specializes in top ten and marine corps audiences.
Gable coached at Iowa. From Wiki.
“His teams compiled a dual meet record of 355215. He coached 152 all-Americans, 45 national champions, 106 Big Ten Champions and 12 Olympians, including four gold, one silver and three bronze medalists. The Hawkeyes won 25 consecutive Big Ten championships, 21 under Gable as head coach and four while he was an assistant coach and administrator. He led them to an unprecedented 15 National titles.”
Wow, I’d heard about this movie but I had no idea Steve Carrell was playing that psycho Du Pont.
We all disdain Redgrave’s politics, but she is a very good actress, and she’s very beautiful also.
Thanx. I didn’t remember the detail
She is indeed. Not many scenes in the movie
Sunday morning bump
