I'm kinda happy about this, because I don't know anyone that hasn't been screwed over by GameStop in one way or another.
Article says they made $2bil last quarter. Why complain?
They are still doing well. Some local branches may be in trouble, but overall, that’s the possible story for about any business. Second, digitally downloaded games are convenient. they are costly, but they update, and you can get something that works, even if you get a new Personal computer.
That’s strange. $2 bil? People I know off just dl the games off torrent.
Then they can’t play them online.
This is more towards console gaming. I do PC game, but for the last 2 weeks, and the next 2 will be Diablo 3. There’s a month long event for a game I play on console, so I’m doing that almost exclusively.
Yes and people I know ; ) dl hollyweird movies the same way. Saves on money and disappointment at the same time.
They could end up like Blockbuster, except that movie watchers and gamers are different target consumers.
Gamestop is alright. The only thing I really don’t like is that when I try to buy a game the keep pushing all sort s of other crap on me.
Just sell me the game and shaddap.
But most of the time I just buy from Steam, because then I don’t have to concern myself with packaging and trash or driving 25 miles.
I buy digitally - my PS3 has a 1/2 terabite HD and I have a Japanese account. The Japanese PS3 Store has 10 premium games for free because most Japanese have already transitioned to the PS4.
I don’t go to GameStop anymore, and frankly, in a couple of years they’ll be in the same place as Blockbuster.
Not just that. Steam works on XBox 360 and PS3, IIRC.
My wife’s Nintendo Wii allows for games to be downloaded digitally through Nintendo’s online services. My XBox 360 has Steam, so I can download and play a lot of games on my XBox’s massive hard drive. With the consoles being able to digitally download whole games, there will be less and less need for buying discs.
Physical media doesn't make sense anymore because it is a huge waste of resources.
Companies who sell physical media will not be in business for much longer.
The nice part about a physical copy is that you can sell it, loan it to a friend, etc. I mostly buy digital though.
Game stop is just a Blockbuster type phenomenon. Here and popular today, gone and forgotten tomorrow when technology surpasses their media as it did with Blockbuster.
Why are digital games the same price as physical media? I get that many steam games go on sale much faster than any physical media, but still would like an answer from Publishers.
Obviously GameStop wouldn’t be happy, their entire market revolves around physical games. Course, I don’t use them so I haven’t really been following the whole deal where they tried to get a finger into the digital market.
All my stuff is through Steam, except a few older games like Darkstone, or one-offs like CreeperWorld. The only recent non-Steam game I own is Starcraft.
Otherwise, I have an N64. And given how rare/expensive games for that are at GameStop, it’s easier to just find em online.
can you download Xbox and Playstation games off those sites?
N64 was good enough for a lot of people, lol
You can sell your steam account!
Had an ebay transaction way back when civ v and steam were starting up. Dude sold me his physical civ v disk.
He had to refund me because that disk was registered to his steam account, and he didn't want to turn over the account.
If you are the kind that likes to sell old games, start up new solo steam accounts for each game. That way you can sell it.
