The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Have been huddling up with plenty of hot tea, soups, and chili. No seed catalogs yet. Lemon tree has two lemons almost ready to pick, and a few green ones and flowers on the way. Mr. Basil in a pot is ready to harvest once again - planted the seed in spring of 2010.
I Hope to be able to check the garden under the row covers, add some mulch if they are still ok, and leave the row covers off for a day or two.
Hope you are all doing well. Most of us have been impacted by the big chill, so we are depending on anyone still gardening to chime in and help us out. LOL
Anyone have any seed catalogs besides tubebender? What are your favorite catalogs that you use year after year?

UPDATE from her Monday email....
Dad is doing well - or, as well as can be expected. They have downsized the trache tube in his throat to a smaller one, and because of that he is able to kind of “talk” a little bit. If he is awake enough, the speech therapist says he can say things like “yes” and “ok,” but not much past that. When he does try to talk, his speech is more mumbled and garbled than anything, and our understanding is that maybe more speech will come with time.
The nurses say that when they try to get him out of bed into a chair, he really tries to help, and still does about 25% of the work for them. Other than that, they are going to do PT and OT a little more often and we will just see from there! I am going back on Sunday for the Thanksgiving week, so I will have a better update after I see firsthand.
Here in Massachusetts, my sage, oregano and thyme plants arrived early this week. All look very healthy and are sitting on the kitchen table where they can get some sun. My tomato plant, since being brought in from the deck, is setting flowers, and my jalapeno plant has small peppers that have grown from the flowers it had set while still out on the deck. The tomato and jalapeno are on the tile floor between the slider and the table. Not too bad for November; at least I have something happening in the kitchen.
It’s been down as low as19 degrees this week and everything is looking very wintery outside, but no snow is on the ground at the moment.
That’s good news. It seems that Arrowhead is making progress?
Who did you order your plants from? Most of the catalogs I get don’t have plants out of season.
It is really nice, how just a few plants spruce up a place isn’t it?

I ordered them from Jackson and Perkins. None of the regular sources were offering plants, but it occurred to me that J & P offer plants as gifts.
I’d like a rosemary plant, too. I’ll see how these do first. I love having herbs in the house during winter.
Me too. Especially fragrant stuff like Rosemary. I do have a hard time getting that to go through the winter though.
It can be susceptible to drafts and insects. I had one that lasted for 4-5 years, and was distressed when it finally died from an insect infestation. It was beautiful, and flowered every year. Oy.
If the rain holds off, we’ll take the fishing boat out Saturday for some striper bass fishing at Ha Ha Tonka. There is a large spring in this Missouri state park that keeps these fish in the area year round.
All we have left growing wise is the garlic, planted three weeks ago. it is up and green. I have a bail of straw that I plan to use as a cover.
Our neighbors bailed out for Florida. They send short notes beginning with “78 degrees and sunny here...”
I love fishing. We fish for smallmouth bass, catch and release here the majority of the time, although we do like having trout for dinner. Usually, though, we like the fun of fishing for bass. We take our dogs out on the boat with us.
I miss those days. Our dogs got old, and it’s been between four and five years since we went fishing. I envy you!
I’ve had deer problems for a couple years now and this has finally ended. I bought a light socket from Lowe’s that has a motion detector on it and a portable motion detector with alarm (audible) from Radio Shack cat. no. 49-426. The audible portable motion detector (9v battery) has a 100 degree angle coverage so works well covering the approach angles to the garden. They are both under the roof of my patio. The small flood light is very bright and cuts itself off after 10 minutes with no motion.
All right! That’s the first successful description I’ve read regarding deer. Congratulations.
I live near a soybean field so can hardly blame them. If I see a big old yellow “Lemon Boy” tomato hanging there I can’t resist it either, lol.

It’s been quite chilly here in South Florida...Global warming you know.
LOL. We have been enjoying all that globul warming too.
Look, maybe it was just overkill - the Won said the earth would begin to heal, the seas would stop rising, because when he was elected, he’d stop globull warming.
So I am seeing him in a comic book in a souped up convertible with goggles, laughing maniacally, in full throttle on the reverse globull warming pedal heading toward the edge of the cliff.
All of a sudden a huge wall of ice shoots up off the tip of florida and hits it full speed ahead and sinks like the titanic. He screams on the way down, that Gruber gave him the exact algorithm so it was Bush’s fault, because Gruber couldn’t have been wrong.
Can you tell I already have cabin fever? LOL
