Country star Ty Herndon has something to share: He's an "out, proud and happy gay man."
Herndon, 52, came out publicly as gay in an interview with People magazine.
He says he's known he was gay since he was a child and started coming out to family members in his 20s. But the "What Mattered Most" singer, who had a number of hits in the 1990s, kept the news close to the vest.
It wasn't until he attended a Tony Robbins seminar in 2009 that he decided to become more public, he told the magazine.
"I realized I had an incredible story that could possibly help someone's son or daughter or grandchild's life not be as difficult as mine has been," he said. "Maybe they wouldn't have to go through as much pain and suffering. It's time to tell my truth." The country music world hasn't always been the friendliest to LGBTQ people, but Herndon sees signs that's changing. Singer Chely Wright came out in 2010 and the open-minded Kacey Musgraves has a song titled "Follow Your Arrow" that was just named CMA song of the year.
"I felt so proud of my city," he said. "I hope that trend continues; I pray it does."
Herndon has been in a relationship with his partner for six years. He doesn't expect his life to change radically now that he's made his announcement.

He can say goodbye to his Country Music career. I guess now he will switch to Rap or maybe move to Hollywood to become an actor. Let’s all wish the homo the best of luck.
I’ll bite.
Country Music station is my morning wake-up music.
Never heard of the guy.
My grandma was Dutch-Irish, and my grandpa was lesbian, that makes me quarter lesbian!
Well you know the Bill Clinton news; just like the Billy Graham news that Responsibility2nd mentioned.
It’s huge and serious.
No one in this house has ever heard of him.
It was 1995.
Those poor girls. I don't particular care if one is homosexual - that's none of my business. But don't go getting married on the basis of a lie and screwing up other people's lives.
I'm a major country music fan and while I've heard his name before, can't say I can remember any of his hits. Going to have to go to Wikipedia to find out.
I do too....I was about 8 years old and fishing off the shore of the lake I grew up on when suddenly the bobber on my line went under the water and my rod bent like the wishbone from a turkey breast.
I stood up quickly and yanked on the pole to set the hook and the battle began. Back and forth, I would real in some line and suddenly it would race back off my reel. After about 20 minutes the fight finally ended and.............
Yes, I know. Just giving you a hard time for typing 1955 instead of 1995.
I was attracted to women as a child, long before I knew what sex was or could do anything about it. I see no reason why homosexuals wouldn’t be also.
I have no idea who Ty Herndon is, but I really wish he hadn’t told me WHAT he is.
“The love that dares not speak its name” has become “the love that won’t shut up”.
I think they just make up names and then celebrate their gayness.
I am glad George is Strait.
Thanks for a much needed laugh. Country music ceased being country music a long time ago. I don’t even listen to it any more, unless it is my old albums.
Yeah, I figured it out. LOL! That had me going I have to admit! ;)
okay... but a 10-year old child might know if he is attracted to someone of the same sex... i do not believe anyone is born homosexual, but i do believe the leanings sometimes begin early depending on the child's circumstances...
