SEATTLE'S MINIMUM WAGE CRASH: $15 to ZERO! Profit's Take A Nosedive!

Seattle, Washington, one of the strongest remaining bastions of liberal philosophy left in the country, passed a phased-in $15 minimum wage law earlier this year. The highest minimum wage in the country. The vote was unanimous and the throng outside cheered, but for many this is a loss from which they will never recover. It is a blow to the profitability of business that they just can't take.

I’m using IE8 (work computer) and the settings are locked by our IT folks...

I’m not a computer genius, if I try and it doesn’t work, I move on.

Sorry, I’m not able to tell you what is enabling me to copy.

Why go to McDonald’s when it’s priced no different than the next tier up? ...

Then the Fudruckers will be $15 ...

They will simply conclude that they didn’t raise it high enough. A new minimum of $25/hrs should fix the problem. And a Directive that prevents employers from closing shop or laying off anyone.

There will be fewer minimum wage jobs as business moves out or automates. For those minimum wage jobs left, there will be some middle class, employed, people who could use a little extra money but wouldn't work for $7.25/hr but might be willing to take a part time job at $15/hr. Businesses will hire these reliable, proven, motivated employees before they take a chance on a teenager, high school dropout or other person who can only qualify for a minimum wage job. End result: less jobs and greater competition. No jobs for the permanent minimum wage workers.

Next week the price of a Big Mac is will be $9 in Seattle.

Or you will have to wait 30 minutes for your order because they are running with half staff.

This will accelerate the trend toward automation of more business functions, eliminating more and more jobs. Every job has an economic value associated with it. If the fully-loaded cost to perform a job doesn’t warrant the return the owner will receive, then the job is eliminated. If the cost of an employee exceeds the cost of an alternative method of performing the same business function, the job will be eliminated.

All laws and regulations like this do is force more jobs underground (cash only); increase imports of less-expensive foreign goods; and increase unemployment among the young, the minorities, and the (already) poor.

Ronald Reagan expressed it well: “Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it”.

even if prices weren’t higher you should do it, just for the satisfaction of denying sales tax to SF

That, of course, would be considered a personal attack by a dedicated liberal.

Facts, reason, common sense, and Econ 101 simply do not enter into a discussion (shortly to be come a viscous argument) as far as a liberal is concerned. They have been told, likely by Bill Moyers on PBS, that such things are facetious and are Right Wing talking points, like the US Constitution ...

The article doesn’t really add much to this discussion.

The law doesn’t start until April 2015.

And, it phases in over 3 years.

And, there are all kinds of exemptions, like a special low wage for teenagers, and special rules for small businesses.

Our state minimum wage will be $9.47 on 01 January 2015.

Seattle will go to $11.00 on 01 April 2015, and $15.00 on 01 January 2017.

Personally, I support any increase in the minimum wage.

It is financial shock therapy for our deranged LEGAL immigration policies.

Since the Reagan Amnesty in 1986, America has deliberately and LEGALLY imported 20 million low skill, low education foreign workers.

Many people at Free Republic avidly support that LEGAL policy.

Unfortunately, that policy has crushed the wage scale for ALL low skill workers in America.

OK.

So YOU lkike a higher minimum wage.

Now. What the workers going to do to EARN their higher wages YOU approve of?

Are THEY going to work 20% faster, 25% more accurately, 30% more efficiently and productively? Are THEY going to produce 20% more product while using 20% LESS material and tolls?

Average “profit” is under 3% ... Where is the “extra money” going to come from?

You got my attention. Reading your post, I was thinking “what the h could I have posted that would have led someone to think I believed that”.

I’m a “Sowell economist” - ANY mandated wage is damaging and counterproductive.
Price floors cause surplus, minimum wage causes unemployment.

I’m nervous about the Right’s shrill calls for a border fence: fences stop movement _both_ways_.
It’s not as if you could “hide in the shadows” if you slipped across the border into Mexico. What, you’re going to do a job Mexicans won’t do??

You don’t want to hear the blood-curdling response you’d get if you proposed that we make Mexico’s immigration policy our own.

Re: “So YOU like a higher minimum wage.”

No.

I like the way it completely destroys the purpose of our insane LEGAL immigration policy.

What good are 20 million low skill foreign workers if the law requires you to pay them $15 per hour?

That’s some round-about way to think about it: higher minimum-wages reduce the number of low-skill jobs in the marketplace (reduction of supply). Therefore, the number of immigrants will drop, as there are not jobs available for which they can be hired (do I have that right?).

I have a better idea. Stop government intervention in the markets through a mandated minimum wage AND secure our borders, allowing only those WE WANT to contribute to our society to enter and remain.
