West Africa is currently experiencing the largest outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in history. Two patients with EVD were transferred from Liberia to our hospital in the United States for ongoing care. Malaria had also been diagnosed in one patient, who was treated for it early in the course of EVD. The two patients had substantial intravascular volume depletion and marked electrolyte abnormalities. We undertook aggressive supportive measures of hydration (typically, 3 to 5 liters of intravenous fluids per day early in the course of care) and electrolyte correction. As the patients' condition improved clinically, there was a concomitant decline in the amount of virus detected in plasma.

Isn’t this great??? And it turns out Mr. Duncan’s family was just awarded the ‘lotto’ by coming to an undisclosed settlement from the hospital that GAVE $500k in medical care for the liar ebola patient. Obola is a disgrace and a shame on this country. I hate the man as much as is possible for a mere mortal like myself. I know I shouldn’t fill my heart with hate but Obama harvests it.
I never heard about this on the regular news.
I bet someone is going to be mad when they find out the doctors wrote a medical article about it.
This was the missionaries. Brantley and Writebol. Not ‘new’ Liberians.
WTH?
We are trillions of dollars in debt, our Vets can’t get medical care, but we can IMPORT Ebola patients?
My Senator and Congress Critter are gonna get an earful tomorrow.
The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Weisbrod says the deal is better than what could have been awarded to the family had the case gone to trial. Under Texas law limits, the family could have received up to $500,000 in damages.
The hospital will also setup a charitable fund in memory of Duncan that will provide assistance to victims of Ebola in Africa.
Give me a flipping break!
Oh - thank you. They were even Liberians.
Dang - were = weren’t
It’s about the 2 Americans-——reading the article would help.
.
They were both American citizens.
The hospital had to come to that settlement. Otherwise, they would have been hit up with a huge lawsuit for not recognizing Mr. Duncan’s illness earlier.
BTW, there is no evidence that Mr. Duncan lied. He was, by all accounts, pretty straightforward about his recent travel from Liberia. I feel sorry for the guy... his family had urged him to come back in June. Had he done so, he would still be alive today.
One missionary, one physician, presumably US citizens. The 0bola czar will make sure that the media will not on report any actual West African patients imported into the US for treatment.
But I wouldn’t worry about any terrorists bringing Ebola into he US. We already have a terrorist in the WH ready to do the job.
Thanks for posting. This is very interesting-goes into detail about Dr Brantly & Mrs Writebol’s treatment, both in Liberia & stateside. Hopefully, all they went through will be helpful for other sufferers.
Alas, I’m not medically trained; some of the terminology escapes me. Does any one know of a non-medical-ese translation around?
Insanity.
No wonder nurses are going on strike
OGovt is awesome. First the narrative was, if you bring your Ebola here we’ll spend half a mil trying to save your sorry a$$ but you’ll die anyhow. Only health care workers get transported to the REAL treatment centers. Now it’s, but if you bring your Ebola here to die, your family cashes in big time! Brang it!! Instant inheritance! Just pop your aspirin, lie your way in, and it’s all gravy, at least for however many family members you have here. Where else can you cash in on your misfortunes like this? America rocks. It’s a world-wide ad to invite more typhoid Thomases and Tammys here. And hey, with Ocare, all that cash is just lyin’ around dyin’ to be spent. The future’s so bright, we gotta wear shades.
What? Seemed very professional to me.
Why don’t you just Google each unfamiliar term you encounter?
I was a little surprised on the Tang and Gatorade in-hospital but that’s cool. Hope it tasted good at that point.
