Strictly speaking, Fascism is a bigger danger in America than Socialism. Both are "leftist" positions, and distinguishing between them is sometimes difficult. Nevertheless, it's important to do so.

Socialism calls for the public (i.e. government) ownership of the means of production. Fascism allows private ownership of the means of production, but calls for government control, in effect negating the the most important features of private ownership.

Some of the major items in our history of domestic fascism are as follows:

Alexander Hamilton's Report on Manufactures, which proposed high tariffs and other aids to manufacturers;
Alexander Hamilton's establishment of a National Bank;
Henry Clay's "American System," involving high tariffs on manufactured goods, along with high taxes on manufacturers, with the revenue going to "internal improvements" such as roads and canals;
Government support for building of railroads, marked particularly by the Credit Mobilier scandal;
Herbert Hoover's actions, as Secretary of Commerce, to obtain agreements among manufacturers, labor unions, and the Department of Commerce to set prices and wages, and divide up markets;
Franklin Roosevelt's National Industrial Recovery Act, which would have established as mirror image of Benito Mussolini's Fascism in America

You can fill in the list with more recent events as you wish. My point is that this problem has been with us for a long time. Getting rid of the "infection" won't be easy, and we must always be on the alert for any relapses.
