Hello, everyone. I'm new to Free Republic and I'm looking forward to the discussions.
There has been a good amount of coverage regarding Brittany Maynard's assisted suicide, and even more opinions thrown all over news websites and social media. After reading through a number of responses, I still didn't find the argument for the opposition of assisted suicide very clear. I understand that most Christians would be opposed to the act purely for religious reasons, but do those who oppose assisted suicide have any valid reasons without appealing to religious doctrine?

Slippery slope as is occurring in Europe and as Dr. Death was practicing in the USA: Assisted suicide becomes euthanasia for any number of excuses — depression, lack of interest in life, imperfect appearance, things too hard.
Set an example for all generations: Life has inherent worth and dignity; we should strive to live until natural death, not prolonging it unnecessarily with extraordinary means, if the individual so chooses.

Did I make it in time?
The government says I am not bright enough to decide what kind of light bulb or toilet to use. Surely I can’t be bright enough to decide matters of life and death....even my own.
It isn’t suicide per se, but rather the “assisted” aspect that poses a difficult issue regardless of religious affiliation. As soon as another person is involved it ceases to suicide and rather murder. Quite frankly, nothing is stoping a person from killing themselves if that is truly their intent, but adding another person or government department changes the dynamic completely. Imagine the coercion potential with “helping” an elderly person to die while a fat inheritance is waiting on the other side. Or the calculation when the government begin to ween the costly ranks of the elderly because they are no longer “useful.” Oh, of course all this is cloaked in compassion. Killing yourself is not difficult...you do not need or require permission to do it. Empowering a doctor to assist complicates their charter to heal and do no harm.
What is wrong with the bathtubs, razor blades and privacy? Remember, go down the block, not across the street.

What really baffles me is why does any one need assistance in committing suicide? There are so many painless ways to die, why ask anyone to help you? There are hundreds of thousands of people that commit suicide every year, without any help from anyone. In my opinion, all this “ASSISTED SUICIDE” debate is just foolishness. What, you’re so afraid to die, so you need someone to assist you?

But I do stand against the government providing an official sanction to euthanasia.
Once you give the government nod to the practice, the government will find reasons to expand it's role - it always does.
Once the government takes it upon itself to decide when "helping" somebody kill themselves should be sanctioned, we're heading towards nazi-style eugenics and political terminations.
In the old days, if you were dying, the family doctor would hand you a bottle of thirty pills and "warn" you that taking more than ten would kill you. That's the nice way to handle it. Not giving some government functionary a bag of syringes.
I think this particular hobbit is going on an unexpected journey.
