Hello, everyone. I'm new to Free Republic and I'm looking forward to the discussions.

There has been a good amount of coverage regarding Brittany Maynard's assisted suicide, and even more opinions thrown all over news websites and social media. After reading through a number of responses, I still didn't find the argument for the opposition of assisted suicide very clear. I understand that most Christians would be opposed to the act purely for religious reasons, but do those who oppose assisted suicide have any valid reasons without appealing to religious doctrine?

First you let the person decide. They we all decide that the family should be able to decide too. Then the politicians will want to get into the act and make your decisions for you when they think you’re no longer worth anything to society. Then the government will set up a board to make laws deciding when people have outlived their usefulness and set a maximum age limit to help “save the planet”. It’s all “slippery slope” and “camel’s nose” stuff.

Because it doesn’t exist. It’s murder. If you kill yourself, then it’s suicide. Someone else kills you, it’s murder.

Everything in the conservative mindset derives from Judeo-Christian faith and ethics. Without set moral truths, there is no valid reason to oppose anything -- taxes, gun-control, abortion, and assisted-suicide included. If you can't recognize this basic fact, you need to reevaluate your worldview.
