Fairfield: CHP sergeant suspected of downloading child pornography on and off duty

FAIRFIELD -- A California Highway Patrol sergeant allegedly downloaded child pornography on a laptop while he was working off duty and on duty near Wi-Fi locations in Suisun, Fairfield and Vacaville, a Vacaville police sergeant said.

The child pornography allegedly downloaded by CHP Sgt. Eric Lund showed pre-pubescent children having sex acts with adults, police Lt. Matt Lydon said.

Lund, 49, of Chico, was arrested at 9 p.m. Thursday on 21 felony charges of sending or selling obscene matter depicting a minor and on misdemeanor charges of possessing obscene matter of a minor in a sexual act, Vacaville police said.

Vacaville police met Lund at the CHP's Fairfield office and served a warrant to search an external hard drive found in his personal vehicle, Lydon said. The hard drive contained multiple downloaded child pornography images, Lydon said.

Lund posted $115,000 bail around 3:30 a.m. Friday and was released from the Solano County jail, Lydon said.

Lydon said it is not known how long Lund allegedly was downloading child pornography, but police began an investigation in August when software they were monitoring indicated someone was downloading pornography.

Police were then able to determine the identity of the suspect.

Lund has worked out of the CHP Office in Fairfield for the past year. He has been with the CHP for 26 years and worked in Chico before his assignment to Fairfield, according to Diana McDermott, the CHP's Golden Gate Division Commander.

What took them so long to pick up on it?

They weren't sure if it was he or his other brother Daryl.

Yeah but I don’t believe ANYONE that was “required” by law to take an “oath” to enforce,defend,protect,obey... the “Law” should EVER be Granted Bail. In Fact they should serve a Mandatory sentence 10 times the Maximum Sentence of a “regular” citizen. No Probation,Parole,Community Service... All Hard Time in General Population.

I’d like to know how a CHP Sgt. came up with $115K, shy of putting his residence up as collateral.

Typically, perps only need to come up with 10% of the bail amount. They go to a bail bondsman who comes up with the rest. If the perp shows up for trial the bondsman keeps the 10% as a fee. If they don't show up for trial the bail bondsman breaks their legs and then sues them for the other 90%. It's basically loan sharking.

That’s not exactly how it works.

That’s not exactly how it works.

Then exactly how does it work? (Other than the breaking legs part, which was a bit of a joke.)

Basically you’re purchasing a short term surety bond. At the same time you agree to waive all of your civil rights should you fail to appear in court. This gives the bail bondsman the legal right to arrest you whenever and wherever he or she can find you.

That includes crossing state lines and arresting on the Sabbath. Any real property you’ve put up to secure the bond is also forfeit to the bondsman. I worked in bail enforcement for a bit.

Yauzza! I’m in the wrong line of work!

That include most of us, but then we'd have to sell our soul and vote Democrat. Organized crime pays.

Many government hirelings also run side businesses or have second jobs on top of their government responsibilities and porn surfing. The government must hire only the busiest beavers. </s>.

“You can screen for many, many things
during a back ground check, but you can’t
screen for sexual proclivities or what is in
a man’s soul.”

Maybe not, but you can watch for signs of criminal and ethical corruption. LE isn’t exactly known for policing their own. That brotherhood mentality makes them too trusting of each other, forgetting exactly what you said. Or worse, happy for mutual back scratching. That makes a very good, and attracting, place for corrupt people.

This makes for a rare event where something was spotted, then followed up.
