Two people with symptoms similar to the Ebola virus were taken by Fire Department ambulances to a Manhattan hospital, sources said Monday.
Both patients were picked up at a New York City address and both are believed to have recently returned to the city from Africa, the sources said.
The two — both believed to be adults — have been quarantined at Bellevue Hospital.
EMS crews who dealt with the patients have also been isolated as a precaution, the sources said.
If confirmed, they would be the first cases in the city of a deadly disease that has already killed 4,000 people in West Africa and claimed one victim in the U.S.

Marines are pretty strong.
They're waiting until Ebola is confirmed, THEN they'll suit up and think about making some kind of infectious diseases quarantine area.
It hasn't happened in Dallas, London, and now apparently New York City.
Seems to me that hospitals are just "Yeah, yeah"-ing the CDC even after the CDC is saying that just being in the vicinity of a patient infected with Ebola is tantamount to infection. They insist the disease is really hard to acquire, but on the other hand we have a young nurse in Dallas who was clad in a contaminated environment suit. Never mind the men in the background using flamethrowers on the infected patient's apartment building and shooting their pets.
... But someone stumbling through the door of an emergency room exhibiting symptoms of Ebola infection? Well, have them sit down in an examination room and we'll 'monitor' them until the tests come back to make sure it's the deadly Ebola virus. If the test comes back positive, we'll make the hospital personnel wear those annoying Tyvek® suits and respirators.
I suppose it'll take ten new genuine Ebola cases (and ninety more people infected from the initial patients) spread out over the whole country before hospitals start taking this seriously. Right now, it's only important to be *appearing* to take it seriously. Every hospital in the nation won't actually implement rigorous measures until they've first had their very own Ebola confirmation sitting around in the ER waiting room.

Well, right. This statement is meaningless.
Them: "We have nobody isolated for Ebola at Bellevue Hospital."
Us: "Well, okay... But do you have two suspected Ebola infectees? We're not asking if you specifically have locked up anyone inside an airtight hamster ball yet. That's two different things."
No. They have been found to have the antibodies to the virus, but there are no confirmed transmissions from dogs. The evidence is not conclusive, but so far there are no recorded transmissions.
Ebola is not airborne. Repeat after me. Ebola is not airborne.
EXCEPT that it is concentrated in the saliva and if a person who is infected sneezes or coughs the saliva will sprayed as droplets... only then is it contagious.
OK, that makes me feel better... it is only airborne like a cold or the flu.

150 people entering from the three affected countries per day. In those countries about 0.1% of the population is infected (1/1000). That means on average we will see 1 new ebola victim here each week and there will be more than that as the situation worsens over there.

I live in southeastern Virginia; my niece is an RN at a regional medial center that serves the area (it’s the only level one trauma center on our side of the water). She told me last week that her hospital’s ER has already treated several people who had recently returned from Africa and were displaying Ebola symptoms. So far, all have tested negative for the disease.
This scenario is playing out in medical centers all across the country. The number of suspected Ebola cases is much higher than we’ve been told. The hospitals are not reporting patients who are being screened, and neither is the CDC. Just a matter of time before one of these suspected cases is confirmed as Ebola and voila, you have your next outbreak.
According to the Washington Post, at least 36,000 people have flown out of Ebola-affected countries in West Africa over the past two months. Of course, all of them were screened, just like the late Mr. Duncan (nod, nod; wink, wink)

People do not realize how uninformed science is about this disease.
It was discovered in the mid seventies. The outbreaks have been pretty sparse, until now.
There are a lot of things, like the dog issue, that the scientists just don’t know.
It is such a horrible disease to get that they (the scientists) don’t do a lot of experimentation on it. Its just too risky.
Two days later he was sick as a dog. Two days later I was sick as a dog. And then my son got it.
So, my husband either picked this up on the plane, in the hotel room or at the office he spent a few hours at. So if Ebola spreads like a flu, we's in some trouble.
Why would they report negative test outcomes? What would be the point of that?
If it did the passengers on Patrick Sawyer's flight would have been infected. Instead his bloody vomit killed the woman next to him plus a couple flight attendants who had to clean it up (not knowing it was ebola). The cases in W. Africa would be in the millions by now. It is possible to spread it by droplets (e.g. animals in separate cages got it, but the cages were 20 cm apart). It mainly spreads by contact and infected surfaces including the "cameraman" who washed some blood off of a car in Liberia.
Problem is some people get sick and they are down and out. Some people are a little tougher and soldier through to points where most could not function.
Like with the flu I mentioned above, my husband went to bed a didn't really get up for a week. I have small business and had orders that had to get out. So, while I was sick (sick as I had been in years AND I get sick all the time) I still got up drove to get some shipments out, then stopped at the grocery and got some sick foods, etc.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
