Microsoft CEO Nadella says Windows 10 will tie everything together in the Internet of Things (IoT)

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Windows has been re-architected to give it a central role in the IoT (Internet of things. He sees the company's upcoming operating system Windows 10 as integral in managing every aspect of the IoT, from the sensors, mechanical systems, to the applications and analytics that underlie it.

Appearing at Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo conference on Tuesday, Nadella described Windows 10 as the first step in an entirely new generation of Windows "as opposed to 'it's just another release after Windows 8.' "

Nadella, appointed Microsoft's CEO early this year, said Windows is not just about tablets, phones and PCs, but is also a platform that can "in fact run across a lot of places where general purpose compute is going to be important."

The attributes of Windows, its management and security, "are going to be more of a premium going forward," Nadella said, such as when users are considering how to keep things like an HVAC system from getting hacked.

This was Nadella's first time at the Symposium/ITxpo conference, which has an overall attendance of 8,500, including about 3,000 CIOs, according to Gartner.

His appearance on stage began with a preamble in the form of a series of taped questions by attendees. When a question about licensing was asked -- "When will you make your licensing agreements simpler and easier to understand?" -- the audience cheered and applauded.

When the opportunity arose to address licensing during his 45-minute appearance, Nadella explained the problem. Some of the licensing complexity was the result of trying to meet the "infinite flexibility" required by customers, but if a one-size-fits all licensing model replaces it, "there will be a different kind of backlash," he said.

That’s just great!

I’m just SURE the Windows PC wouldn’t be the PERFECT attack platform to hack your ENTIRE house or anything.... ROFL

God Help Us.

Your home heating system, your car’s ignition, and your pacemaker all talking to one another and deciding what to do based on a Windows operating system.

Microsuck, still pretending to be Apple, the true innovator..

Their version will suck as always, when compared to Apple...

Bwahahahahahahahah.

Expecting Microsoft to lead IT development is like expecting Yugo to lead automotive engineering.

RE: Expecting Microsoft to lead IT development is like expecting Yugo to lead automotive engineering.

Let’s remind ourselves though, while the YUGO is practically non-entity in the automobile world, Microsoft DOMINATES the OS world.

As much as we love to hate Microsoft, *That* IS THE DIFFERENCE.

I bought my first MS-DOS computer in 1983. I built my first one in 1985. I’ve stuck with Microsoft for all this time, but my next computer is going to be a Mac. If there is going to be an IoT, I think that Apple will do a better job of making it work without making my toaster try to kill me.

I don't know, this looks like some real innovation to me.

Yeah, take a look at that link — if Microsoft goes fully formally verified formal methods on their next OS, you can bet that it'll blow Apple away in terms of reliability and security. (I've said for a while that the first company to get a full formal-method verified OS out there is going to have an astounding leg up on the competition, barring absolute incompetence in (A) marketing, and/or (B) management.)

Based on windows hate - I’ll take a skeptical wait and see. I was so delighted with that release that I have gone over to ubuntu. I dare MS to woo me back.

Microsoft has always been hated since the Blue Screen of Death of Windows 3.0.

But despite the hate and despite all the talk and warnings of going to the Mac or Linux, here is what I still see circa 2014:

The Server Market is where Windows does not dominate, but then, it is still the leader

Let’s remind ourselves though, while the YUGO is practically non-entity in the automobile world, Microsoft DOMINATES the OS world.

Microsoft dominates the desktop OS world, and has a leading position in servers. However it has no position whatsoever in the mobile world - and the vast majority of interactive computing devices today are smartphones and tablets. It has hardly any presence in the embedded world; I can think of a few copiers. But what OS runs your home router? It's either Linux or VxWorks.

Microsoft may wish to be closer to the hardware, but it will never happen simply because it's impossible for them to compete with free Android (the GUI) on top of free Linux (the kernel.) Even royalties on commercial RTOSes are a dollar or two per unit. As I recall, Microsoft wanted $50 for WinCE, and who knows what for WES (never was able to buy one, though wanted to.)

Usually commercial offerings have some advantage over crude and mechanistic F/OSS solutions. But in this case we have a very stable OS (Linux) and a very good GUI (Android) [not counting traditional GUIs, like X Window System with their own infrastructure.] There is no business reason to buy Windows if you can use a free OS. There is even less reason to buy into Windows [RT] world, as you are getting less freedom and more restrictions along with higher cost.

At this point Microsoft would do well if they focus on what they really have - business (desktop) OS, some server products, and some office products. Their server is horrible and they should abandon it ASAP (it's slow as molasses soaked in liquid helium.) But one thing is clear: they cannot infinitely expand anymore like a balloon in vacuum. They are stuck in an established and shrinking market. But I don't expect Microsofties to ever acknowledge that, as it would have serious repercussions for their stock price.

OMG, such grand plans and illusions! Will you just make a damn OS that's intuitive and stable??? Gates had the vision in the 90s that the PC will run everything. NOT! Toasters, hair dryers, and now PCs, just make an appliance that does its ONE thing well. Microsoft desperately trying to remain relevant. Sitting on piles of cash and out of ideas.

Now, want to talk about the Xbone?

Well, Unix and Linux are essentially the same thing, so Windows loses 56% to 36.6% in the server market.

All that the public, and most businesses, wanted was an updated, repaired, supported forever OS that looks and operates exactly like Windows XP Professional. People would have paid Microsoft from now on for any new OS that they didn’t have to re-learn.
