Formula 1 star Jules Bianchi is fighting for his life in hospital after spinning off a rain-soaked track and into a recovery vehicle clearing up an earlier crash in the Japanese Grand Prix.
The race was cut short by nine laps as Marussia driver Bianchi dramatically crashed out at the same site as Adrian Sutil's Sauber - which had aquaplaned off the track and was being recovered by marshals and machinery at the time.
Unconscious but breathing for himself, Bianchi was taken to Mie University hospital, 10 miles away, and the race was stopped on lap 46. Bianchi's father has since told French television that his son's condition is 'critical' and he has undergone surgery for serious head injuries.
According to FIA officials, the 25-year-old Bianchi will be moved to intensive care where he will be monitored after the surgery.

Racing ping.
There are some tricky turns on that track and wet conditions make it all the more challenging.
If Senna and Revson and Donohue can die....anyone can
A severe sport
Wasn’t Senna the last fatality in F-1?
Safety has improved dramatically but it can never be 100%. When I was young back in the 60s and 70s the drumbeat of deaths was fairly constant. I was even at a race where a racer died. It was sickening to those of us who enjoyed the sport. Before my time but the 55 Le Mans crash which took out 80 spectators must have been the absolute worst.

Watched the Jap GP earlier, had it DVRed. Rough day all around.
“Racing is a blood sport. It can get you, and then it can get you again.”
Steve McQueen from the movie LE MANS.
Last grand Prix death...yes
Been 3 open wheel F1 racing car deaths since
Indy is most deadly circuit period for any division
This isn’t just a thousand to one shot. It’s a professional blood sport. It can happen to you, and then it can happen again.
I was trying to quote from my poor memory. Great movie. Great cars. Great actor.
