The United Auto Workers union said Friday it was creating a chapter at the only factory within auto giant Daimlers global manufacturing system where workers lack union representation.
The local chapter aims to represent the 3,400 US employees at a Mercedes-Benz plant outside of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the southern United States, and is being formed with help from German trade union IG Metal.
This is the formation of a local union that will become the bargaining agent for workers at this facility, said Gary Casteel, UAW secretary treasurer and vice chairman of the Daimler workers committee. This isnt a petition for an election.
As membership roles grow, the UAW and IG Metal will pressure the company to accept the UAW as employees bargaining agent, he said.

Only Ebola would be more unwelcome at that plant.
The South is not hospitable to these union goons:
The UAW just lost a big election in TN even with the company on their side!!
“Volkswagen employees say ‘no’ to United Auto Workers in Tennessee”
http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/14/us/tennessee-vw-union-vote/index.html
The South is the most American region of America. Here in Dixieland, aside from the holderites, the people are overwhelmingly pro-God, pro-life, pro-gun, pro-military, pro-business, anti-sodomy, anti-taxation and anti-union. Unquestionably, the South is the land of liberty and freedom.
Being a German company the suits at Daimler are probably in agreement about having representation. As I recall VW had no problems with a union at their Tennessee plant. It was the rank and file that shot it down.

Dementia.
Das Volksunion...
It's the National Socialist way!
Yup.
And it’s a right to work state. Folks can just refuse to join.
So Benzes built in Alabama,it appears, will soon be on my banned list.
No need.
My Mercedes stranded me so many times during my two years of ownership (thankfully new and under warranty) that I thought it was one of mr GM POS machines. Sold it to some other sucker who bought their act.
So, why bother trying to bring their quality further down?
The union thieves will make them an offer they can’t refuse. Their greed is making them desperate.
I long for the day when unions are abolished along with their evil companion, the minimum wage.
Would have thought you would have referenced their former red-headed stepchild Chrysler. They had a hand in dragging the Daimler brand down quite a bit.
I still see a lot of W123 and W124-types still on the road.
And how many jobs will be lost when this factory goes offshore to remain competitive???
