America is doped up—and drunk.

According to a shocking new report from the Health and Human Services Department, there were 24.6 million people aged 12 or older who used illicit drugs during just one month last year.

“That’s enough people to fill every major league baseball stadium in the U.S. 19 times,” said the report. There are 30 MLB stadiums.

Even worse: Of the 24.6 million dopers, 2.2 million were adolescents aged 12 to 17. …

The article further states that 60 million people had a binge drinking episode, including 1.6 million adolescents.

I’ve read that, prior to prohibition, basically a third of all Americans were in a stupor at any point in time.

I’m just waiting for some agency (DEA, USDA, EPA, it don’t matter) to declare water to be an illegal drug.

No real shocks here. Wouldn’t matter if you looked around Iowa, or downtown area of Atlanta....you’d still find the same stat’s.

I’d also press the number higher if you included legal drugs that were being acquired and used in wrongful doses (Oxycodone for example).

It’s a self-reported number, however. I expect that the actual is significantly higher.

Wow binge drinkers outnumber potheads 3 to 1... that surprises me a little. Add in just the binge drinkers numbers and it jumps from 1 in 12 up to 3 in 12 then.

So I am assuming from the article, illegal users are the targets as the only Americans “doped up” huh?
They included 1 legal drug, alcohol, in the article, but not the big one... Nicotine, guess that is harder to figure now with ecigs and all. Also they give numbers for non medical use of prescription drugs and separate number for pain killers, but no number of legal users of these for comparison??

The number of binge drinking outnumbering potheads should not surprise anybody. That’s what college age kids do every Friday night and all Friday night.

“Add in just the binge drinkers numbers and it jumps from 1 in 12 up to 3 in 12 then.”

I suspect there’s some overlap in the two groups.

The article further states that 60 million people had a binge drinking episode, ...
******************************
The problem with the so-called study is that it doesn’t define what is considered to be binge drinking.

I’ve read such studies in the past where someone having more than three beers or two glasses of wine a day was considered to be a binge drinker. .....Such a term is useless without definition.

proud to state i’ve never used an illegal drug, ever.

what i do wish is that they’d make hempseed oil legal because apparently it has some cancer-related health benefits, and it’s not something you smoke. the type of hemp oil you can buy legally doesn’t have the compounds that work against cancer, but it’s a good oil for overall health.

Drugs are used by so many and in such quantities that we need to seek a new palliative to combat this societal illness.

First we MUST put a halt to the misguided WAR-ON-SOME-DRUGS!

New drugs should be engineered so that those who are hopelessly inclined to intoxication can take something that is much safer than what is now available.

Let pharmaceutical companies do research and create and sell safer drugs to adults, and limit their liability if sued. People who want to take drugs should absolve those trying to make it as safe as humanly possible for them to do so.

It will NEVER happen! Because common sense is in such short supply these days.

I don’t understand why people can’t just stick with the fall down drunk, blackout, vomit and violence inducing all American booze swilling and leave the bad stuff like pot alone.

It is worse than people think. You go to the doctor and complain of Osteoarthritis pain, can’t take the OA drugs as they cause GERD and bowel shut down. Wham you get a script for 5mg NORCO (formerly Lore Tabs), then that becomes 10 mg, 15 mg 20 mg you are HOOKED.

Your DOCTOR is the worse legal drug pusher on the planet.

Same goes for the behavior drugs they like to stick little boys on. Those have some real doozy side effects, including suicide, and anger.

Same goes for the anti depression drugs, they are all addictive. Other drugs are addictive too. Lyrica, Gabapentin, Xanax, Cymbalta, Prosaic.

Now the push to legalize MMJ for pain, it puts you in LA LA land where you DON’T care about the pain. It does not work on pain.

No wonder we have an academic of drudged out people.

Again Your DOCTOR is the worse legal drug pusher on the planet.

I ought to know, mine pushes it all. I live in chronic pain 24/7/365, instead of fixing the issues they just try and dope you up. There are no cures for a degenerative spine, Colitis Ileus, damaged Vegus nerve, OA, OP, Fibromyalgia, and their drugs they use to try and control symptoms cause Drug induced GERD and Drug induced Osteoporosis.

Lyrica is one of the worst drugs ever marketed besides the OP drugs, ALL of which have FDA WARNINGS ON THEM!

FDA WARNINGS OP DRUGS

Reclast UPS kidney failure, A FIB risk, A Typical Femur Fractures, Jaw Degeneration. Not to be given to Asthma patients. Just 1 use of Reclast can leave it in your system for LIFE.

http://www.webmd.com/osteoporosis/news/20110901/fda-osteoporsis-drug_ups-kidney-failure-risk

Safety update for osteoporosis drugs, bisphosphonates, and atypical fractures
http://www.fda.gov/drugs/drugsafety/drugsafetypodcasts/ucm229800.htm

Black box warning Foreto (additional info, this drug REVERSES itself after the 18 month to 2 year treatment IF you survive the side effects)
http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=21853

Like most useful medications, Forteo may have its possible downside. In animals, it promotes the development of osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. In humans, osteosarcoma has not been reported but it remains a concern with Forteo. (The daily injections are also a downside.)

Last spring I came down with pneumonia; dragged myself to the hospital on day three. On day six & coming out of it with antibiotic IVs I told the doctor I was so sick I hadn’t had a drink in six days. Sort of a joke.

He immediately wanted to put me on Librium! Assumed I had the D.T.’s. I extended my arm with fingers extended & joined & held it steady as a rock until he decided I wasn’t in alcohol withdrawal after all.

That wasn’t based on observed symptoms, that was only what I told the doc! I finally convinced him that going without a drink was no worse than going without a candy bar. Sheesh!
