DALLAS A Texas emergency rooms mishandling of the countrys first Ebola patient prompted the CDC to issue a nationwide alert to all hospitals updating them of how to appropriately respond to possible cases of the deadly disease.
Its a teachable moment, as we say, Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a Thursday press conference.
The latest guidance includes a poster with quick rules for evaluating returned travelers and a checklist.
The move comes nearly a week after Thomas Eric Duncan showed up at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital with what officials described as fever and abdominal pain. Duncan, who had just moved to Dallas from West Africa, reportedly told hospital workers that he was recently in Liberia, one of the hardest hit areas of the deadly Ebola crisis.

Mishandling?
Teachable moment?
We see ‘mishandling’ and mistakes and screw-ups in made-for-TV scare movies. We shake our heads and comment, “that couldn’t happen in real life.”
Now, we shake our heads and wonder whether we are in some made-for-TV movie, because such mishandling, mistakes, screw-ups should not happen in real life.
This country’s government seems entirely unable to accomplish anything beneficial. Protection of its populace is the most basic requirement of all, and this regime either fails .. or refuses .. to carry out even that task.
Paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard....
Another problem is that they are getting hung up on semantics (IMO)...they are saying transmission requires an exchange of body fluids. What exactly does that mean? If I am infected and the symptoms are just showing up and I’m walking ahead of you at the local Krogers and I sneeze and you breath in right behind me - guess what - we have just exchanged body fluids.
OMG! Our gov’t is more stupid than we thought!
OMG! Our gov’t is more stupid than we thought!
I do not believe a word that comes out of CDC.
Let me know when you are doing your next night shift in the ER and let us know how many Ebola patients you can identify?
Good luck charting on the electronic medical record with the hazmat suit!
What about all the stand alone care places we have everywhere now — the minute clinics, patient first type places ? I work in one of these and people come in routinely with flu like symptoms -— we work in tiny cramped rooms with little ventilation and patients sitting tightly squeezed right next to each other .... Not to mention our clinic is located right near a grocery area .....
ER’s in major hospitals in major cities are no place for low information people to be working. Ebola issue has been in the news for quite a while. Some heads should roll on this one.
Political correctness is going to kill us all. Goodbye America.
No HAZMAT suit?
They appear to be just washing it down the drain. Which means it’s in the water system now.
