The first confirmed case of “Spanish flu” was in March 1918.
By October 4 to 6 million Americans had the flu during that one month, and 200,000 of them died, that month. That’s leaving out the many millions elsewhere in the world.
I’m not sure it’s reasonable to call that a “slow spread.”
By comparison, we reportedly have <10,000 confirmed cases in Africa to date. That’s since December and in third world sanitary conditions and crowding. To my mind that rate of spread indicates it just isn’t very contagious from an epidemiological POV, or we’d have cases in the six or seven figure range by now, not in four figures.
Also, a couple of infected people got into Nigeria some time back, but they’re presently reporting only about 20 cases. I believe we can do a better job of controlling spread than Nigeria.

Dear God, that is so sad yet frightening. Started with 1 now multitude. I totally agree what the soldier had to do to those who are trying to escape. There is no choice but do what is necessary to protect others. Wow just sad what poor condition their medical environment is.

They (CDC, Drs. gov.) are trying their best to convince us that Ebola can’t be transmitted if a person is not showing any symptoms. I want to know why this is being presented as an absolute FACT. If a person is not showing symptoms and has been infected they still have the Ebola Virus in their system just waiting to expose itself. From what we are being told then that person would be OK to have as a blood donor???
The time line between the start of the outbreak and the logarithmic phase is the parallel of which I speak. From today’s date hereon will be telling. I do agree that our medical system can handle all but a catastrophic outbreak or a lethal mutation (airborne variant) of the disease. We cannot be complacent in the face of this disease and measures needed to keep it out.
With our health system already being taxed from the Illegal Immigrants that flood the ERs, I wonder just how well an overburdened system can handle it?

March to October 1918: 8 months probably 20M to 50M cases.
December 2013 to October 2014: 10 months, <10,000 cases.
That seems like a really huge difference to me.
Which doesn’t mean it won’t yet go exponential or that great precautions aren’t appropriate. I just think a lot of the hysteria on this site and elsewhere isn’t justified.
I do agree the CDC isn’t covering itself with glory so far.

With or without the doctor’s protest on the way this public health, immigration and travel is being treated by the Federal government in light of containing this disease, common sense says we do what Britain did and cut off travel to and from Liberia and other heavily infected areas of Africa. Quarantine travelers for 21 days (incubation period for Ebola) before allowing people from stricken areas to enter the country (including citizens and non-citizens).
Had this happen to me. My daughter and I flew into Miami. They stopped us, two blonde, white females, got the pat down, even shoes off to check for shoe bombs and right behind us two heifers in full muslim garb only eyes were visible. I am sure I was drawing flies, my mouth was wide open as they strutted on by. WELCOME TO OBAMERIKA.
By next week they’ll be asking old white grandmas if they have been to Africa while letting Africans walk through- to avoid “profiling”

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
