A Maple Lake couple walked away from a major accident. Their convertible crashed into a moose.
The accident happened on Highway 55 near a boat landing in Maple Lake Monday night Don and Terry O’Connor say the moose popped up right out of the cattails and slammed into the small convertible.
“I’m just thankful to be alive,” Don said.
“I just remember a great, big, brown something, some sort of animal, coming toward the windshield,” Terry remembered.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says moose of common up north, but it is very rare to see a moose in Maple Lake or anywhere close to the Twin Cities.
After the accident, the Maple Lake Fire Department hauled the moose away in a 10-foot trailer. The DNR issued a permit, so the meat could be saved.
The massive animal shattered the windshield of the O’Connor’s car, bent the frame of the window and pushed back the soft top of the convertible as it flew over the car.
Maple Lake Fire Chief Todd Borell says the couple is lucky to have survived such a crash.
“Very lucky. Very lucky to be alive,” Borell said. “I’m thinking they hit a semi or something. That’s what went through my mind. You know, hitting a moose never crossed my mind.”
The couple didn’t walk away unscathed. Don had to have 34 stitches in his head and more on his knuckle. He also has a broken eye socket. Terry walked away with a big cut on her head and a concussion. Still, the couple considers themselves lucky.

There was a huge moose on the side of the road. It had been hit by a car - a Chevy Impala. The OPP had come by to put the poor thing down.
A few miles down the road we saw the car at a gas station - it was totaled. The moose had gone through the windshield and landed on the young couple in the front seat. They were from Manitoba and wound up spending their honeymoon in the hospital.
