It was not a pretty weekend for the Iowa Hawkeyes. After jumping out to a 14-3 halftime lead against cross-state rival Iowa State, the Hawkeyes fell apart, letting the Cyclones come back to score a 20-17 victory on a last-second field goal. Its the third time in the last four years that Iowa has dropped the rivalry game to Iowa State. For many Iowa fans, the blame for the failure, and for most of Iowas struggles in recent seasons, rests on the shoulders of head coach Kirk Ferentz.
Things havent always been this bad for Ferentz. Just four years after taking over for Hayden Fry in 1999, Ferentz had built an Iowa team that, from 2002 through 2004, went 31-7 while collecting two Big Ten titles. Things then cooled off for a bit, but after an 11-2 season in 2009, which ended with an Orange Bowl victory over Georgia Tech, Ferentz was rewarded with a massive ten-year, $35 million contract to keep him in Iowa City for the long term.
The first problem that has arisen for Iowa is that Ferentzs performance has fallen off since signing that new deal. In the four-plus subsequent seasons, Iowa is just 29-25. And the second problem, as I briefly highlighted in a recent story on head coach buyouts, is that Ferentzs contract just so happens to include one of the costliest buyouts in college football...
According to data reported to the Department of Education last year, Iowa ranks No. 11 in athletic revenue among all college programs. Whats more, its $30 million in profits are second only to Alabama ($34 million), topping even Texas ($27 million) and Notre Dame ($20 million)...

I went to Iowa State. Keep him! It helped us win the game!
The game was great. I posted a picture of the deeply discounted t shirts at Hy Vee that read “Beat State”!!
Hah!
As long as Iowa is good enough to get to New Year’s Day bowls, he;ll keep his job.
not really...most overrated coach in the most overrated conference...they used to talk about NFL teams after Ferentz- why?? have his teams ever played beyond expectations?? cripes- they barely beat Ball State a few weeks ago...
Over rated conference? Not close..everybody has it as only fifth out of five. Ferentz is probably better suited for the pro game. He wouldnt have to worry about recruiting and player development.
He’s had a great run,but is definitely overpaid now. Hopefully things will improve come Big 10 games. There are a lot of overpaid coaches in the Big 10.
so an NFL coach doesn’t have to worry about player development?? not close....
how many people gave Ohio State a fighting change to be in the title game this year?
Gonna get worse as the offense continues to sputter.
Pittsburgh will roll us this weekend!
I think we (Hawks) will be OK. 8 wins and a January bowl game.
We are lucky to Have coach Ferentz. A class act. Good coach and runs a good program.
Ohio State isnt a conference and you have far far more player development in the NCAA than the NFL. You are guessing kids potential oft times as 16 year olds, building their bodies and playing skills and often with 110 plus players, double of whaat an NFL coach worries about. So I stand by what I said he would have an easier time as an NFL coach.
LOL- i understand Ohio State is not a conference but year in and year out they are the best the B10 has to offer and they rarely make a dent on the national scale....
to say an NFL coach does not have to worry about player development is ridiculous- coaches get fired when they can’t develop players and don’t win....one player (Manziel, Tebow) can carry a college program- not happening in the NFL...
in ten years Iowa has produced 4 first round picks- Tex A&M had three- in last year’s draft alone....Ferentz is a marginal recruiter and mediocre at player development- he wouldn’t last two seasons in the NFL...
They don’t have to worry on the same level as an NCAA coach that is for damned sure. To argue otherwise is pure foolishness and purely uneducated.
Secondly Your argument still does not hold on OSU. Nobody ranked the CONFERENCE, 14 teams, very high. Out of the power five it is ranked dead last. Dead last.
Lastly you completely ignored the point on Ferentz. A+M recruits Top Ten classes every year. Look at final rankings and compare them to reruiting, see a pattern? You should but probably won’t. That is where Ferentz fails he can’t recruit, in the NFL he wouldnt have to. He knows how to coach but when it comes to getting the best players on campus, well good luck he sucks there.
I think this will all fall on deaf or stupid ears, you are obviously some SEC fan or some other half wit who doesnt know football outside of his region.
LOL- you continue to embarrass yourself...i don’t care about the SEC rather facts; Ferentz is a marginal recruiter, a marginal developer of talent and a marginal coach- as a result he gets marginal results...
despite your continued waste of bandwidth the facts bare me out...
case in point the ridiculous statement that A&M recruits “top ten classes every year”; three years ago they were a garbage program run into the ground by Dennis Franchione then Mike Sherman but guess what? they got a good coach who knew how to recruit, develop and game manage (ditto for another Texas school- Baylor)...
Ferentz and the Big Ten always have high hopes come August- hopes usually dashed by the end of September...
but please- humor me with more of your ignorant opinions...
should also add your constant statement that somehow the Big Ten is continually rated as the “fifth best conference”, meaning they are rated below the ACC (a one team league- FSU) and the mighty Big 12 just adds to your stupidity...
and btw- here are the 2013 pre-season top 25 in college football; the Big Ten is tied for second for the most teams in the top 25 and also have the second ranked team on the list- but please; continue bloviating...
The 2013 preseason AP Top 25 College Football Poll has been released and the Alabama Crimson Tide top the rankings. Alabama received 58 first place votes and 1,498 total points.
Ohio State comes in at 2nd in the AP Poll. The Buckeyes received one first place vote and 1,411 points. Oregon, Stanford, and Georgia round out the Top 5. Georgia received the only other first place vote.
The Top 5 of the AP Poll is exactly the same as the Top 5 of the preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on August 1.
The SEC leads all conferences with six teams in the AP Top 25 poll. The Big Ten and Pac-12 are tied for second with five teams. Listed below is the full conference breakdown:
