I don't see it as arrogant in any way. But I think it's a slightly odd thing to say.
I think that makes every bit as much sense as the original report.

IMHO, in her mind, we all should respect veterans for their sacrifices as she does. In addition, since she is a mom, she might have thought that it would have helped her son.
We need a blurry sounding audio tape of the event to clear up what Palin said ...Does CNN have anything?

This is just a guess, but Sarah screaming about her son being a vet was probably a misguided, but failed attempt to appeal to any shred of patriotism and decency these thugs attacking her son just might have.
