High school teachers in west suburban Hinsdale have taken a step closer to a possible strike, amid stalled contract talks with Hinsdale Township High School District 86.
On Tuesday, the Hinsdale High School Teachers Association filed a strike notice with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. That starts a 28-day countdown until teachers can actually walk off the job.
District 86 Board President Dr. Richard Skoda said, I am especially saddened by this because last night the Board unanimously announced in public that we were seriously weighing the Unions proposal, which we received at 10 p.m. Sunday night, and sought time to thoughtfully cost out that proposal and meet with their leadership to ascertain that we were using the same numbers in our analyses.
Skoda noted the timing of the notice from the union would allow a strike to begin right before the football game between Hinsdale South and Hinsdale Central, which is also Hinsdale Centrals homecoming.
In a statement on unions website, officials said, The board has made minuscule changes, superficial adjustments and incomplete proposals since last September, while we have been making significant concessions to try and meet their extreme demands. Hinsdale High School Teachers Association lead negotiator Jeff Waterman said the strike notice is a necessary step to make progress in contract talks.

Well, Bye!
Teachers in the district earn on average $105,494, according to 2012 data the most recent available from the State Board of Education.
Teachers, however, say the offer is so low that take-home pay will actually go down. Union spokesman Mike Palmquist tells us: “Under the board’s current offer, the take-home pay of nearly every teacher would be reduced. The teachers association is interested in keeping pace with comparable districts in order to attract and retain quality faculty.”
That’s been a theme from the union that the excellent education kids receive will suffer dramatically if the school board has its way. The schools won’t be competitive enough to attract quality teachers and maintain programs.
We find that hard to believe. A teacher opening in Hinsdale draws, literally, hundreds of applicants. The district has the luxury of choosing among accomplished applicants from dozens of top-notch schools. A one-year frozen tax levy in one of the state’s wealthiest districts is not going to derail educational excellence.
Keep in mind: Only a small fraction of the teachers threatening to strike actually live in the district fewer than 50 of the nearly 400, according to Skoda. So of course the teachers want the levy to go up. They don’t pay taxes into it.

Well then they ought to support lower taxes. Problem solved.

Whether that line is an aside or not, it is good to see they have the important priorities lined up.
They don’t like that 106K, maybe they will better enjoy the (wanted) $15 working for McD’s in what surely will be about a 25 hr wk - at least till the autorobotons show up to feed the few people left that are willing to spend 10 bucks for a big mac and small fries.
I haven’t been in a McD since one of their ‘strikes’ last year.
If management doesn’t have the gonads to FIRE the strikers than they don’t want my biz.
Haven’t been in a SubWay since MZBO seemingly worked out a healthy menu together.
All I need is a person that has “WIDE LOAD” tattooed on her butt telling me that I eat the wrong foods....
At least the kids tell them clowns to ‘shove it’ so I guess all isn’t lost.
$105K Annual Salary plus Taxpayer paid for FREE Platinum Health, Eye, and Dental Care Insurance is just the Rainbow. Let’s not forget about their Pot of Gold at the end of their rainbow with annual pensions averaging $85K along with those FREE Health Care Insurance benefits. Sooner or later, all of those unfunded pension benefits will come due and after all of the Politicians continued to kick those cans down the road making promises to the Teacher Unions that the Tax Payers couldn’t possibly keep. And always remember, it’s never really about the children!

Khaaaaaaaaannnnnnn Academy!
No word on if their union dues would be reduced to help make up for the shortfall....
Just hearing the crickets now...
Funny how budget cuts never have to affect the union leadership...
Thanks for that! I am perusing the site and plan to use it extensively!
I'm not sure how this is going to resolve. There is a LOT of Clout, (Money) in that community, and it's not always a good thing to piss off the Chicago power structure. There are any number of CEOs in that town, and they have never responded well to Leftist blackmail. It's not impossible that District 86 could break that union. There are thousands of teachers who would kill to teach there, where 98% are college bound, and the big discipline problem is parking for the all student's Lexus, Mustangs, Porches, Prius'.
The same union thugs who are always telling us that they “care” about “the churldren.”

That’s hilarious!
They make it sound like Hinsdale is “white-flight removed” from the Southside.
Fire these “educators” who only “work” 8 1/2 to 9 months each year (not counting vacation days during the school year), get great benefits, reasonable salaries and great retirement. They won’t be missed.
A lot of the teachers probably don’t live there because it’s so pricey.
.
I bet they can find a lot of teachers to replace them at half the salary
I grew up in Hinsdale and went to Hinsdale High. Any teacher anywhere would kill to get a job there .beautiful, safe, riot-free town.
Wikipedia: “Hinsdale is listed in the top 1% of wealthiest towns in Illinois, and is known locally for its beautiful residences and teardown culture, of which new rebuilds have taken 30% of homes in the village. The town has a rolling, wooded topography, with a quaint downtown, and is a 22-minute express train ride to downtown Chicago on the Burlington Northern train line.”
Perhaps these well-paid teachers think that only the wealthy pay taxes from which their salaries are paid. But the shopkeepers and accountants and others with mid-to-low level incomes will, as usual, bear the brunt.
Also, the quality of education is sinking Hinsdale High is now ranked 7th in the state, a decade ago it was closer to the top. When the teachers get it back up there, they can talk about a raise. http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/illinois/districts/hinsdale-twp-hsd-86/hinsdale-central-high-school-6781
these jackasses just came off a three month summer vacation....all contracts should have been setteled before the new school year started....total nonsense with these idiots...
Is that 105 thousand of actual salary or does that include the other compensation factors?
