Penn State bowl ban lifted immediately, full scholarships for 2015-2016

The Penn State Nittany Lions are eligible to play in a bowl game this season after the NCAA ruled they are satisfied with the athletic department’s progress in ensuring it functions with integrity.

“Penn State’s commitment to the integrity of its athletics department and its progress toward meeting the requirements of the Consent Decree are clear,” said Northern Arizona President Rita Hartung Cheng via NCAA.org, who chaired Monday’s Executive Committee meeting. “We thank Senator Mitchell for his meticulous and exhaustive work over the past two years. Mitchell’s efforts and the dedication of Penn State officials made today’s decisions possible.”

Penn State was given scholarship reductions and banned from postseason play after the Joe Sandusky sex abuse scandal that rocked Happy Valley and college athletics that resulted in Joe Paterno being removed as the head coach and swift and severe penalties being handed down.

The university had to pay a $60 million fine, was banned from postseason play for four years and vacated its 112 wins from 1998-2011. The Nittany Lions also had to lose 10 initial scholarships for four years beginning in 2013-14 and will drop its total number of scholarships from 85 to 65 for four years beginning in 2014-15 and was placed on probation for five years.

A reduction in the penalties was announced in 2013 that allowed the Nittany Lions to have 75 scholarships in 2014, 80 in 2015 and the full allotment of 85 in 2016.

This is a significant victory for the university, first-year head coach James Franklin and the football team that will no longer be punished for the crimes and misdoings of others.

Penn State is off to a 2-0 start and has one of the best quarterbacks in college in Christian Hackenberg and is almost assured of reaching the six wins to be eligible for a bowl game.

Joe Paterno protected his football program when he should have protected the little boys who were being raped.

You can hide behind all the legalize you want - morally, he failed. Abysmally. That's his legacy.

(imo).

...you need to preface all your posts with that little blurb, in order to have any validity...

Mary Kay (daughter) controls the rights to Joe’s likeness and some of the 409 trademarks. Nahhhh...that’s not worth any money. No damage was done there.

Yaahhh right - look to this very forum as proof positive that freeh/ncaa damaged Joe’s likeness.

As to Jay - while he is part of the Paterno suit (along with many ex-players and other ex-coaches), that is separate from Jay’s suit against the University.

Joe Paterno protected his football program when he should have protected the little boys who were being raped.

...please define what you mean by ‘rape’...if you are referring to anal penetration, there is zero evidence that Sandusky did any such thing...

...yes, Paterno failed an examination of his moral fiber, but to wildly accuse him of protecting rape is grossly misplaced...

This is sick.

The NCAA is about two years away from being toast. There should be people in jail over what happened there, beyond the bugger that was actually humping boys in the shower.

Anything goes now.

the NEXT lawsuit will take care of that

Yeah, but where do the rape/molestation victims go to get their life back?

Mary Kay (daughter) controls the rights to Joe’s likeness and some of the 409 trademarks. Nahhhh...that’s not worth any money. No damage was done there.

...if that’s the Paterno’s evidence of financial damage, good luck...they’d have been better off suing PSU, as direct plaintiffs, for wrongful dismissal...but again, good luck...

Yaahhh right - look to this very forum as proof positive that freeh/ncaa damaged Joe’s likeness.

...are you asserting that people expounding on this forum should be introduced as evidence by the Paterno’s...? Otherwise, I have no idea why you bring it up...do you expect everyone to agree with you entirely...?

Between the O’Bannon case, the Northwestern union vote, and a couple of other issues brewing, there won’t be an NCAA much longer.

It’s all going to get blown up, and nobody is quite sure how it will come back together again.

When was the last time the NCAA won a lawsuit against anyone?

Joe Pa, as he admitted, ‘’should have done more.’’ He knew or should have know what Sandusky was doing.

You intentionally left out the other part of that quote - “With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.”

Sorry, that’s not an admission of guilt - simply a classy thing to say.

What is the line that you feel Sandusky crossed? What specific acts are okay with you, for adult men to “do” with young boys?

I also heard they are getting rid of that idiotic cat mascot and replacing it with Elmo.

“Elmo love you! So does Jerry!”

Oh, please. Stop excusing his decision to turn a blind eye to rape in pursuit of success and fame. He was an evil man.

That statement is an admission he knew or should have known.

Joe Pa never said he had no clue as to what Sandusky was doing. If he didn’t know, or should have know, his statement would have said he had no clue whatsoever what he did. That would have been simple and direct.

His statement was that a lawyer would draft for him in order parse what and when he knew it.

Evil is accusing someone else of being evil without knowing the facts. You do know the prosecutors in this case said there was no evidence Paterno covered up anything? It is important you carefully read up on the case if you are going to say such things.

Nice try. Read Posnanski’s book. He was there - in Joe’s living room.

Joe wrote those words and everyone involved said “you can’t say that”...he told them if he didn’t say it, it would appear as if he didn’t care.

I think this is just a way for the NCAA of saying,”Oops, we over stepped. This was a police matter, not football.” Time off for good behavior? I don't think so.
