Nigeria Teams up with MasterCard to Launch ID Cards

Nigeria launched new national identification cards this week, and President Goodluck Jonathan received the first card. Each card contains biometric information and has the capability to receive electronic payments. The first phase of the collaborative effort between MasterCard and the Nigerian government will issue cards to 13 million Nigerians. The government plans to use the cards to electronically deliver salaries and pensions to reduce mismanagement of government payments.

Some Nigerians are not excited about the identification cards. The Premium Times reported on citizen’s concerns about the collection of biometric information. Nigerians also reported distrust about the collaboration between MasterCard and the Nigerian government stating, “The new ID card with a MasterCard logo does not represent an identity of a Nigerian. It simply represents a stamped ownership of a Nigerian by an American company.”

Although I’m not in favor of the mark of the beast, I do find it slightly sad that the USA does not have the resources that Nigeria has. I mean — an impoverished third world country from Africa, can provide ID cards for citizens. Meanwhile, here at home, such an idea has been floated, but quickly shot down by African Americans. We’re too poor. We’re too stupid. We just can’t handle it. So, no voter ID here in America. Perhaps one day America will rise up to the level of a third world country.

I had this idea when the US first occupied Iraq. While “big brother” is a loathsome idea here, it might have “been the cat’s pajamas” in occupied Iraq.

Managed entirely by the US military, not the Iraqi government, every US military unit would have a detachment who would create identity cards on the spot. Sectarianism is avoided, because the only thing on the front of the card would be the picture of its owner. But on the back would be an encrypted dot matrix barcode, that can hold a lot of data.

Being in public without your ID card would be grounds for being detained until your identity was determined. Among other things, the card would be good for:

Voting, rationing, health care, internal passport (if you live in Mosul, what are you doing in Basrah?), other government services, and for some, banking and as a debit card.

In short, it would make things much, much harder for insurgents and foreigners to operate. And since it would not be controlled by the Iraqi government, no sectarian hanky panky, no corruption, etc.

All the military detachment would need would be a hand held device that would be a combination camera, fingerprint scanner, and ID card reader that would have a WiFi connection to the military database.

Of course it wouldn’t solve all their problems, but it might be a very helpful tool.
