53 national religious groups, academics, ministers urge alternatives to U.S. military action in Iraq

An emerging ecumenical paradigm called “justpeace” offers a fresh way to view and analyze conflicts. This gives rise to the realization of a broader set of smart, effective nonviolent practices to engage hostile conflicts. See below for a recent example of this approach initiated by the ecumenical Faith Forum for Middle East Policy.

A PDF of this letter is found at the bottom of the page.

August 27, 2014

Dear President Obama:

As religious communities, leaders, and academics, we write to express our deep concern over the recent escalation of U.S. military action in Iraq. While the dire plight of Iraqi civilians should compel the international community to respond in some way, U.S. military action is not the answer. Lethal weapons and airstrikes will not remove the threat to a just peace in Iraq. As difficult as it might be, in the face of this great challenge, we believe that the way to address the crisis is through long-term investments in supporting inclusive governance and diplomacy, nonviolent resistance, sustainable development, and community-level peace and reconciliation processes.

Do they believe hugging it out will work? Maybe sending a couple of thousand “COEXIST” bumper stickers?

OK. What is the answer? Another "Bring Back Our Girls" Twitter campaign?

Send a few of this Kumbaya Kouncil as envoys to ISIS. They’re running out of raw material for their beheading videos.

I don't much care for wars and revolutions. Except where pure evil is involved. ISIS is pure evil. The God I believe in did not plan for them to be on this planet.

God didn't create ISIS. We did, by creating a power vacuum in the Mideast and arming the genocidal maniacs.

Disintegrate ISIS now, before they and their practices go global and can't be stopped. Civilized nations might already have waited too long.

What is wrong with these" religious leaders"?

Obama may be very good at inspiring Democrats to donate their money to him, but Obama may even more of a fundraising inspiration to ISIS.

One year after B. Hussein Obama was legally empowered to “Fundamentally transform the United States of America,” ISIS was born in 2010. Since then, ISIS has grown in numbers and conquered area.

ISIS has also financially benefitted by the erasure of Obama’s “Syrian Redline,” Obama’s abandonment of Military support for ally Iraq, and a pledge to not send US Marines or Army Troops back into Iraq.

Obama has doubled the US National Debt, downsized the US Military, and avoided developing a strategy for 5.5 years. With the USA thus weakened by Obama, ISIS is poised to treat Obama’s “transformed” USA as the irrelevant Obamanation that it actually is.

Pacifism is cowardice in action.

The list of signatories for these things is always interesting, and never a surprise. Lefty Catholics and Lefty Protestants, working together.

Military action should be abjured in favor of having some non-profit organization in the private sector nuke the ISIS folks.

ISIS is trying to replicate the first century of Mohammedan expansion. The Moslem US Government is trying to facilitate that process.

Perhaps those who signed this should go to Iraq and try out some of their ‘diplomacy’.

Primitives respect only one thing, a greater force. Why we continue to negotiate from a civilized point of view is a complete waste of time. Defeat them physically or prepare to be ruled and abused by them.

I wonder if their feelings would be the same if it were them being killed instead of some one else?

They are driving non-Muslim communities from their homes, beheading children, beheading adults who refuse to convert, beheading Americans for being American, and planning to expand the violence to Europe and America. In response, these people want a broader set of smart, effective nonviolent practices? How about we send all of our Gender Studies, Nonviolence Studies, and Ethnic Studies academics to Iraq to teach ISIS about just getting along?

These folks need to take their message directly to ISIS. I Suggest they load up a plane full of like minded folks & go to Syria/Iraq for direct talks.
