THOUSAND OAKS (CBSLA.com) — A poisonous albino monocled cobra was loose in Thousand Oaks after it bit a dog Wednesday morning, officials said.
The attack happened late Monday afternoon in the backyard of a home in the 1300 block of Rancho Lane.
The dog was taken to a veterinarian and its condition was unknown.
The cobra, which was photographed by the dog’s owner, is venomous and very dangerous, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control.
State Fish and Wildlife and the LA animal services responded to the area in an effort to find the snake.
Residents were advised to keep their pets and small children indoors.
If anyone sees the snake, immediately call 911 or (818) 991-0071.
It’s a beautiful snake but an unfortunate mishap.
Contrary to some people’s opinions, cobras *do* have a purpose on earth otherwise God would have not put them here.
In their native lands, they are mostly found in rice paddies and other fields of grain, hunting the rats and mice that eat the food and spread deadly diseases.
The people there never kill them.
They just relocate them because they understand the cobra’s beneficial role in their life.
It was more like 1/3 the way down the body.
Of course, on a snake, you can't be sure where the neck ends and the body begins.

LOL! If they were wise, they’d quardon off the neighborhood and find that thing before it kills someone. My guess is that it’s under a house, with an ample supply of mice and/or rats as its diet.
No matter what you say, no sane person keeps deadly reptiles as pets.
I hope they find the moron who owns this snake and kick his ass. Why people are allowed to keep these kinds of reptiles as pets boggles the mind. Our Everglades are filled with pythons that are wiping out the local wildlife. Stupid people do stupid things that end up hurting those of us who aren't stupid.
Just saw a news report about this and they said the dog was expected to survive. Dry bite, maybe?

I’ve seen the non albino (dark brown/ grey) version on that sucker near my house in Chiang Mai twice. There are large rice fields backin up to my wall. The soi dogs actually leave them alone. Crazy.
Well then, if I found one of those, I'd keep it......in fact, I'd probably let it live in my living room.........

Cobra antivenin would have to be flown in or obtained from a zoo that keeps that antivenin on hand. I bet that it would cost in the neighborhood of at least $3-5K. In some cases it takes several vials to save the one bitten. Even today, to treat a dog bitten by a copperhead or water moccasin will cost upwards between $2-5K using a common antivenin. One vial will not treat an average bite. The majority of my clients will not treat with antivenin and opt for supportive therapy.
Better call in the EPA. This is probably the only albino cobra at large in the USA and definitely an endangered species.
I said it was available, not that most owners would do it.
I have health insurance on my dogs and the insurer will pre-approve payment for situations like this.
Best money I spend every month.
Most hunters I know don’ even treat Copperhead bits unless it’s near the face.
The dogs feel lousy for a few days and recover.
Not sure my nerve or faith is quite that strong.

Some people think owning AR15s is “crazy”.
It’s freedom of choice.
Cobras, despite popular notions, will go out of their way to not bite and *not* “waste” venom.
It may well have been a warning shot.
It takes a good bit of pestering to goad them into a full blown bite so the dog was lucky, thank God.
There are bazillions of videos of people interacting with venomous snakes available.
Wouldn’t hurt to research this and dispel some of the silly myths of “killer snakes”.
Check YouTube for “chased by a water moccasin” for good perspective.
99.9% of the time, all a snake wants is for you to leave it alone long enough that it can escape your presence.
