As an outlier aberration, like pedophilia, the numbers are so small as to be statistically insignificant and thus just part of genetic drift.

The way I see it, that gene occasionally expresses itself through a "common" mutation that simply means that such a mutation is a dead end since it cannot procreate, in most cases. It could be by design, or perhaps by chance, no way to tell as far as I'm concerned.
