KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP) -- The cheerful sign outside Jane Cornell's summer school classroom in Pennsylvania's wealthiest county reads "Welcome" and "Bienvenidos" in polished handwriting.
Inside, giggling grade-schoolers who mostly come from homes where Spanish is the primary language worked on storytelling with a tale about a crocodile going to the dentist. This poster and classroom at the Mary D. Lang Kindergarten Center are a subtle representation of America's changing school demographics.
For the first time, U.S. public schools are projected to have more minority students than non-Hispanic whites, a shift largely fueled by growth in the number of Hispanic children
The shift brings new academic realities, such as the need for more English language instruction, and cultural ones, such as changing school lunch menus to reflect students' tastes.
But it also brings up some complex societal questions that often fall to school systems to address, including issues of immigration, poverty, diversity and inequity.

Aztlan is nothing, I guess it extends as far as Pennsylvania!
White people should be demanding their minority status and be given free stuff.
Doesn’t matter what the percentage is, its what percentage actually graduate and can read and write with at least at an 8th grade level. Do that study and tell me what the percentages are.
GREAT...Mexico and the rest of Latin America is corrupt - drug ridden - and vastly poor...yes Barry - flood the US with this and who will pay the taxes?
What do they bring to the table other than an appetite?
America could have had a better immigration policy. A more careful yet easier legal immigration system based on health, safety, merit, and kindness/charity. A guest worker seasonal or occupational program that benefits both sides. And tight borders, and visa accountability, allowing precious few illegals.
But noooooooooooo...
No.
It's too late for that. English is too old school. What we need is lots of mandatory Spanish instruction. We must learn to communicate in the tongue of our overlords.
As if this was something they just figured out? I live a block away from the high school I attended. When I went there in the early 70’s the majority was slightly White, but we had a very good proportion of others. now when I look a the students coming and going, there are fewer Whites than the least represented minority when I attended. And this is friggin West Anaheim,CA., not the border in San Diego.
What worries me is that our tax dollars are going to teach in Spanish and to teach the English kids a different culture instead of teaching them skills they will need to work in life.
We did have immigration laws but they were never adhered to.
Are the tax-paying residents kept in the dark and fed crap like this so they won’t rise up against their masters that allow this situation?
It’s been like this in Los Angeles for a long time. White folks send their kids to private schools.
Savannah High?
We are going to end up like Brazil, with the crime and corruption, but with snow too!
Western
Had a girlfriend way back when who went there, and also Pacifica.
So, are we supposed to celebrate the fact that the cross border invaders have finally outnumbered whitey or what? What is so wonderful about this?
“Bienvenidos”? What a wonderful way to encourage kids to assimilate...to become *non* hyphenated Americans.
They’d have to give it to themselves, because I just bet you the (former) minority hispanic children’s families don’t pay taxes.
