Inside the Tiny House Movement where more and more Americans have rejected tradition for a simpler..

Once upon a time an American family’s home was their castle and the bigger the better, but growing concerns about meeting mortgage payments and the environmental impact of large houses has helped fuel a new movement of people who are happy to live small.

The Tiny House Movement is a growing group of people who are happy to downsize the space that they live in and enjoy simplified lives as a result.

While the average American home is around 2600 square feet, the typical small or tiny house is around 100-400 square feet.

I watched a show about tiny houses. In order to get around zoning laws they have to build them on a trailer frame. A lot of these people spent 40-50 thousand dollars building the equivalent of a starter RV. It you’re going to spend that kind of money, why not just buy an RV?

"In fact, I MIGHT just build a big pole barn with about 500 sq ft of ‘living space’ and forget about a house altogether."

That particular movement is gaining momentum around here and across the river in W.Va.

Buy a few acres and build a large pole barn and then make a two story apartment in one corner. I know one guy locally who did that and made a wood working shop and garage in the rest. His real estate taxes are one fourth what mine are. When we sell a few more rental properties we are doing the same thing!

...”still we wrestle with our several hundred boxes of books...”

Do an ‘entire wall’ for books....floor to ceiling. Worked great for me in a small area here.

I don’t think people living off food stamps read, many probably can’t.

Unless, of course, they are Wymns Stydies or Social Sciences PhDs.

I saw a local featured on the news- the problem was she didnt have a place to park it (and legally dispose of her waste. I dont have an issue with the lifestyle at all, but they need to be hooked into a waste system

Tiny houses for thee, mansions for me.

This is all part of the desire of the “elite” to make a larger difference between their lifestyles and others’.

"A lot of these people spent 40-50 thousand dollars building the equivalent of a starter RV."

That is because these people have no clue how to use re-purposed lumber and windows and such.

A local guy built one for use in a permanent camp site using used and re-purposed materials and his total bill for the entire project including paying someone to transport it to the resort was 21,000 dollars. And that included the big screen tv and all the special appliances.

Some of these people go and buy a brand new trailer frame for over 5K (and up) when you can buy a used rattle-trap RV trailer for under 1k and you can tear it down and re-purpose the lumber and wiring and plumbing. Then you go to the nearest re-use center and get the rest of your lumber and materials.

A realtor tried to sell me a house up in the hills. Plenty of floor space, nice living room, but half the house had walls that were 6 1/2 feet high! Instant claustrophobia!

I still love the 10-12 foot ceilings. My house does have 8 foot ceilings, but MY den is 12 foot!

True but as I posted to another freeper, they either need to be in a mobile home or RV type park, or have access to waste disposal. A local story on this highlighted how some of these folks are parking in yards of friends and that is fine if they are not dumping illegally

When Emperor Obama took the chair, he said that we couldn’t just drive where we want, what we want, or set our A/C at whatever temp we wanted.

Our standard of living is too good compared to the rest of the world. We have to be taken down several notches.

Worst President EVER.
