NORWALK (CBSLA.com) Wildlife officials were set Friday to canvass a residential neighborhood in Norwalk where a video surveillance camera captured what appeared to be a large wild cat possibly a lion prowling the area.
KNX 1070s Bob Brill reports Norwalk Public Information Officer Jeff Hobbs said he has received confirmation that the animal was not a mountain lion.
The video footage dated July 29 which captured images of the animal in front of a home in the 11000 block of Tina Street near Orr and Day Road was sent to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, according to Hobbs.
The city of Norwalk is located about 8 miles southwest of the Turnbull Canyon mountain bike trail in Hacienda Heights, which has had some reports of mountain lion sightings in recent years.
However, Hobbs said officials have not yet determined exactly where the animal may have come from.
I think most people are coming down on the side of, Oh, thats an old lion whos just looking for something to drink, he said.
In the video footage, the animal appeared to have a mane and looked more like the type of lion seen at a circus or zoo and appeared to be non-aggressive.
A representative from the Department of Fish and Wildlife will be visiting local residents to pass out literature and let them know whats going on, Hobbs said. Authorities say they will respond to reports of a actual sighting as opposed to just a video.
Authorities say anyone who encounters the animal should treat it as potentially dangerous and notify law enforcement officials immediately.
Someones guard dog got loose.
Uh, yeah...
Lived in that area for most of my childhood. Learned to drive in Turnbull Canyon.
Cats of Peace?
I wonder if the dog shooting police would be the first ones that I would call if I spotted it.
Big cat ping!
Kitty ping.
Here Kitty, Kitty! Come snuggle with Mommy!
It’s not “The Cat” from Red Dwarf is it?
Yep Turnball Canyon know that area well ;)
the tail looks phony...
I don’t think old dogs hunt at 3:44am. Also, notice the curled connection of tail to body. That is definitely a big cat, leopard or panther. Part of Scarface’s menagerie of pets in Norwalk? LOL
From the video I saw it sure looks like a mountain lion to me. Look at the head and the tail.
Looks a lot like a dog. Remember the scandal in China a couple of months ago when a zoo as displaying a “lion”!that turned out to be a Tibetan Mastiff.
Every once in awhile there is a report of a cougar in our suburban neighborhood to the east of Seattle. Odd, but there are plenty of wild corridors of bike trails, parks and large utility lines that run from our neighborhood about 20 miles to the foothills.
Foothills that include Cougar Mountain.
Is it a bobcat? Aren’t they smaller than a cougar, but bigger than a housecat?
You would think the reporterette might go to where the video was made and give us an object of known size to compare with the kitty on the video.
We will trade you our anaconda for your kitty........
