I’ve learned a lot from the outpouring of reader response to my two recent columns — 64 clips of movies you can’t find on DVD and Even more clips (70, in fact) of flicks you can’t find on DVD — about movies you can’t find on DVD.

Older movies will look horrible on DVD on modern TVs unless they are remastered. My guess is that the studios don't think they can sell enough copies to justify the expense.
Some of them are real gems, many are not something I would want to watch.
I have no idea what “M” is about.
I was surprised that “The Scarlet Letter” (1926) and Show Boat (1929 have not been released on DVD. “The Wind” (1928) seems only to be available in the PAL format used in Europe. I’ve seen “The Wind” and “Show Boat” in the theater.
“M” is a murder mystery / thriller set in Germany between the world wars. It is considered a classic of cinema techniques.
I am surprised considering some of the utter crap that ends up on even Blue Ray.
M...... staring Peter Lorre? I saw it as a kid as a B movie back in the late 40’s. If I remember correctly M meant Murder, but wasn’t there a young girl involved? Maybe it meant molester too?

Warning - don’t go to that NY Post page unless you have lightning fast internet. I have fast enough internet and after two minutes and it was still loading, I just gave up on it.
That is entirely possible but there should be a way to do so. Tobacco Road is one of my favorites that didn't make this list. Mr. Frost is a modern film that is not available.

I still have my VHS of “The Wind” that I bought in the late-1980s. Along with “Greed” and “Docks of New York.”
Always nice, though, to see silents screened at a theater, along with live musical accompaniment.
The original “M” with Peter Lorre was a 1931 German classic, directed by Fritz Lang. I thought it was in the public-domain, as worn copies used to be all over the place on VHS, but I’m surprised if there hasn’t been an official high-quality, ‘restored’ release.
There was also a rather forgotten (American) remake, from 1951, featuring David Wayne and Howard da Silva. Maybe you saw that one at the theater.
Old films can certainly look great on dvd, if they still have high-quality 35mm elements. There are some old films going back to the early-1930s that look absolutely stunning, if top-notch source material survived and was used.
Do you know what looks bad, though, on modern TVs? Television shows from the 1970s/80s that were shot on video-tape, like sitcoms and variety shows. Also, in the 1980s and maybe even early-1990s, a lot of otherwise nicely 35mm filmed tv-shows unfortunately used videotape for editing their master copies. Thus the masters are rather soft for high-definition sets, and look less impressive than a lot of older filmed tv-series from the 1950s/60s/70s.

yes, I had trouble too. 100 DVds listed with a link to each clip on youtube. I had trouble seeing the previous lists as well.
They're right this isn't on DVD.
Just burn a DVD when it comes on TCM. I got hundreds!
Right now DirecTV is having problems with satellite reception here so I can’t till the problem clears up.
