U.S. doctor contracts Ebola in Liberia

A 33-year-old American doctor working for a relief organization in Liberia's capital has tested positive for the tropical disease Ebola, according to a statement from Samaritan's Purse.

Dr. Kent Brantly, medical director at one of the country's two treatment centers run by the organization, recognized his own symptoms and confined himself to an isolation ward.

It was not immediately clear how he caught Ebola. The relief group's Melissa Strickland said that he had followed strict safety protocols when treating patients.

"It's too early to try to explain it. We will have an intensive and thorough investigation," she said.

Across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, at least 660 people have died from the illness, according to the World Health Organisation, as poor, ill-equipped African governments have struggled to cope with the virus.

Yes. Another doctor was diagnosed on Wednesday. Several other health care workers have contracted Ebola and many have died.

This is a nasty disease. The fatality rate during this outbreak is not as bad as in past outbreaks, but it is still around 60%.

I’m praying for both doctors.

We’re one plane ticket away from it being spread here.

Let's hope ebola hasn't gone airborne.

His immune system failed him.
Probably because it had to work WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY TOO HARD over there in lovely Africa.

He ought to come back to HealthyLand, USA and restore his immune system to something resembling normal.

Sad to say, but in a way it is good the mortality rate is so high. It dies off before it can spread far.

Just heard on Foxnews that this doctor contracted the virus on an airplane from Nigeria to Liberia from a business man.

Indeed. In general, the more deadly a disease is, the more likely it is to kill off its victims before it spreads far.

I will not discuss the details, but in Africa, one of the ways that Ebola spreads is through the way they prepare bodies for funerals. Another is that they will eat dead animals that they find. So this disease actually gets some help to spread.

Prayers up for this doc.

He is in the Elwa hospital just outside Monrovia. I visited that hospital a few years ago, it seemed to be one of the few facilities of anykind that actually worked properly in that country.

I suspect Obama would love to fly him back to the United States... but the good doctor needs to stay right where he is...

Obama will trade 4 detainees for each doctor with Ebola.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

His children are very young. The Brantleys are extremely devout Christians.

He is a faithful member of the church of Christ.
