Those who run the city's animal control shelter say more cat foster parents are helping save feline lives.
Cat euthanasia was down by 50 percent last month at The Animal Care and Control Team, the nonprofit that manages Philadelphia's animal control shelter, compared with June of 2013.
"For kittens alone we actually saw a decrease of 72 percent," said Sue Cosby, executive director.

Or are they building more Panda restaurants?
Rather than put him down, we decided to do hospice, because he is a valued friend.
We give him pain medication twice a day and will until the end.
Putting a friend down is very traumatic. As is this, but this allows him to go in his own way. Hurts just as much.
I am sorry to hear that. I just put down my 17 year old long hair a few weeks ago. Freak’n killed me to do it. We could have done the whole chemo/pain thing but at that point, aren’t we really doing it for us? I mean, if there’s no chance of recovery why put them through it? They rely on us to make that decision for them. Just my 2 cents and I am in no way mocking your decision. They’re family through and through. I hope you have a lot more time with your BW.
Bless you for being such a caring person and making your cat’s life comfortable in his last days.
It is good news, but the term “foster parent” sets my teeth on edge as does “pet parent”. Humans do not give birth to these animals after all.
“the term foster parent sets my teeth on edge as does pet parent. “
They are “adoptive” “parents”. While I understand your frustration of treating pets as humans, but on the other hand, many pets are nicer to their “adoptive parents” than their biological children.
I think a lot of it has to do with the animal. I had a big, strong Siamese that I put through Chemo at age 12. He was a tough cat that let me trim parts of him lymphoma tumor w/ a razor blade in his mouth so he could eat more easily.
The chemo ended up killing him, but I stand by my decisions with him. He was a true Alpha Cat.
Aborting all the many Chinese girls?
Yeah, because they can’t talk back.
Besides, biological children for the most part aren’t given a proper chance by this anti-family society.
I’d like to see more permanent adoptions of these animals either way. But given the feral nature of many city-dwelling humans, I’d hate to see them go to the wrong home.
No, it’s cat youth in Asia.
They’re giving pet EBT cards now.
” it just needs to continue. “
Why? They are cats.
Has birth control for domestic dogs and cats become easily available and affordable? This may be one reason for the decrease. The result is less uncared for animals out there, making them that much more precious.
Bingo! As I scrolled down through the remarks, I just knew another vet had already voiced my own reply. If they're serving cat meat, it is a clear indication that dogs are in short supply. Once the soy sauce and spices hit the wok, there's no telling what kind of meat they're cooking!
He just died in my arms a few minutes ago. We will get over it, but it is a loss. Now we only have two of the litter he was from.
I am so sorry for your loss. I know it hurts so much right now, but in time the pain will lessen and the fond memories will remain. Just remember all the wonderful times together: the silly antics kitties display and the gentle purring as you he lay on you as you pet him. Those little wonderful furballs may not be human, but they are undoubtedly family.
I like to believe our pet friends will be waiting for us on the Rainbow Bridge to guide us into eternity. My sincerest condolences.
