An armed robber fled a Berlin supermarket empty-handed in frustration over his lack of German language skills.
The unidentified man entered the store in the city's Mitte district, placed a rucksack on the counter, produced a knife and started gesticulating wildly at the two female staff members, police said.
He then vaulted over the counter and continued a series of hand gestures that only further confused the women, aged 28 and 29.
"The offender said something unintelligible but the threatened shopkeeper did not respond," police said in a statement.
One ran into the street calling for help, prompting the man to flee after abandoning both knife and backpack, which the staff later realized he had wanted them to fill with cash from the register.
Police were searching for the would-be robber after Tuesday's incident which happened at 7pm.

Ich bin ein Badrobber!
Guest in their country.

Ahh, you learned all your German from Hogan’s Heroes, like me.
Arabic?
And the man wins the Jelly Doughnut prize...
well played..
In France they would either sneer at him and ignore him, or natter about his pronunciation.
You missed a critical point. The store was robbed at 7pm. The stores would have been long closed by then in France. One more reason to love the French.
If he was one of Holders people he would at least speak Austrian.
Die Duplos sind klein, aber oho!
Arabic?
More likely to be Turkish, since for decades the Germans have been importing "Gastarbeiteren" (guest workers) from Turkey. Supposedly, this has been done to get work done that German workers won't do. Now, *where* have we heard *this* before...
