California man, 80, guns down pregnant home invader: ‘I shot her twice, she best be dead’ Tom Greer killed the woman after she and a man jumped him and robbed his Long Beach house Tuesday night. The couple fled after he showed his revolver, but the woman was killed as she tried to run away. BY SASHA GOLDSTEIN

They came to the wrong house.

An 80-year-old California retiree shot dead a pregnant woman as she and a male accomplice tried to flee Tuesday night after breaking in and robbing the man’s home in Long Beach.

And Tom Greer has no regrets about plugging the woman with two shots as she begged for her life.

“She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant! I'm going to have a baby!' And I shot her anyway," Greer told KNBC-TV.

The elderly man, wearing his arm in a sling Wednesday as he spoke to a reporter, said he came back to his house in the ritzy Bixby Knolls neighborhood Tuesday evening and found the woman and a man ransacking his home.

"When I went in there, they tackled me," Greer told the news station. "Both of them jumped up on top of me."

Good memory. The TX vs. CA distinction is probably important.

Also Horn shot them on his property, not in a common area.

And Horn told them that he would not shoot them if they stayed put for the police - they were not unarmed and begging for their lives.

Horn also called 911.

Another possible factor: a plainclothes cop was on the scene at Horn's and did not identify himself - I believe the reasoning was that he was afraid that something might happen to Horn if he announced himself and confused the situation before uniforms arrived.

Pretty thin stuff, and no-billing Horn probably prevented further inquiry into this aspect.

somebody’s on your property uninvited then you can kill them

Not actually true, as a blanket statement.

Also, it is unclear whether she was on the property.

I'll have to buck the trend of most of the commenters in this thread. I believe people have a right to shoot people that break into your home, but when someone is clearly caught and begging for mercy, shooting them is no longer an option.

This was stepping over the line.

Exactly.

But he made a mistake even before that, if the story is correct.

When he came home and saw his house being ransacked, he should never have gone in the house.

He should have called the cops.

That is assuming that he knew they were in the house before he entered.

If he did not know before he entered, the reporter is a sorry excuse as are most of them.

Should have shot her in the house. No problem whatsoever with that. Chasing her down and shooting her in the back is murder. I’d charge him in a heartbeat.

Agree. That was a bridge too far.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic. We have to watch who we support in these cases...because if kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out becomes the battle cry, we really will face stricter gun control laws.

I hope he is able to find an attorney that is 2nd Amendment sympathetic and is capable of vetting the jury pool.

I hope he receives Justice, which in my opinion would require him to be in Prison probably till he dies. He murdered that woman and then bragged about it.

He's done.

I’ve heard people say “it was only a property crime.” I disagree. My belief is that if you have no respect for the law, you should not expect the law to have any respect for you. If you are in the process of committing a crime, you should have no rights - PERIOD.

Pregnant or not, the blame for her death is squarely on her. If I were on this man’s jury, I’d let him walk.

Am I just A BIT over the top with that??

You are. Bad meat can pass diseases to a dog. You don't know what these predators might have been exposed to.

Sounds like he has already said too much. Maybe he wouldn’t be convicted criminally because of his age, but his civil liability will very likely destroy any assets for his estate. Too bad, too.

That is undoubtedly true. However, how is it protecting one’s property to shoot a burglar who is fleeing from one’s property and stumbles in an alley? That’s retribution, not self defense or protecting one’s property. I would have had no problem if he had shot while he was being tackled, or perhaps even if she were shot during the act of burglary. Shooting the robber while she was fleeing is not self defense, property defense, or any other kind of defense, though. It’s murder plain and simple.

Me too, but there are so many people out there who have never been victims of crimes, especially violent crimes like I have, and they have no idea how fast a victim can lose their life. For all this guy knew, this bitch could have been packing heat and shot him in the stomach as she was leaving, that happens all the time, they want to leave no witnesses. So why take that risk? F that bitch, if that was me she would be going down as well. If she is crazy enough to break into his house, she is crazy enough to kill as far as I’m concerned and I sure as hell am not going to gamble my life when I can neutralize that threat.

The problem is, he told the reporter that he knew none of that was the case.

Reporter asked straight out whether they had weapons. He said no.

She had already left, he went up to her after she stumbled outside - if she was going to shoot him as he was leaving, the moment had passed.

He killed her out of anger, not fear.

The admissions he makes are amazing in their actionableness.
