The NFL hasnt been sufficiently accepting of Michael Sam, who came out as the first openly gay professional football player earlier this year, due to the religious Rights influence in NFL locker rooms, says one ESPN commentator.
On Tuesday, Pardon the Interruptions Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon were discussing former NFL coach Tony Dungys recent comments that media attention would have pushed him away from drafting Sam. Kornheiser said he was optimistic that NFL players would be personally tolerant of Sam, though.
Im more skeptical, Wilbon countered. I think there is a component, a subculture of the religious Right, that is very influential in football maybe not the other sports, but football and I dont see this going as smoothly as you see it.
The Oprah supported reality show on Sam was canceled. Sam was trying to cash in on his new found fame.
They like to compare Sam to Jackie Robinson. Robinson was a Hall of Famer with tremendous talent. Sam isn't in the same league, no pun intended. Any criticism of Sam will be viewed as homophobic.
I say give him the Heisman Trophy right now. He’s going to get it anyway even if he spends his whole career on the bench.
Lets get rid of the whole pretense of ability having anything to do with anything.
Is there a big “gay” community in St. Louis to come out and buy tickets???
It would be a public relations headache for them to cut him.
The untold story here is that lots of guys get drafted but get cut in training camp. Just getting drafted doesn’t mean a player will for sure make the team. If that happens to Sam, the liberals will have their hissy fit and generate tons of bad publicity for the Rams and the NFL.
Which team is the one team in the NFL that wants to move?
That’s why the Rams drafted Sam.
In St Louis, the Rams are "dead team walking"....They know their move from St Louis is inevitable.
Dugy’s black. That means that a member of a minority of less than 1.6% has superior rights to a member of a minority of less than 15%.
Funny, the same people who are condemning Dungy had no problem with Tebow being labeled a distraction by several teams due to his faith and following.
Dungy’s sin is he has made a statement that could be construed as not being totally sold out to the homo agenda. No hint of dissent can be tolerated in the name of toleration.
“If that happens to Sam, the liberals will have their hissy fit and generate tons of bad publicity for the Rams and the NFL.”
Well-put. But I think the Rams know that they risk a firestorm by cutting him - and they won’t. They don’t want to take the bloom off the rose, so to speak, for being the team that drafted the first openly gay college player.
If he’s not playing well, he’ll ride the bench. But at the same time, if they don’t play him, they’ll receive criticism that Sam is not getting playing time because he’s gay.
The Rams really stepped in it on this one. Their only way out is to hope that Sam actually develops into a good player in the NFL.
I have heard Amaechi before and yes his comments in the past are on par with what he said. He is about a self-righteous conceited arrogant anti-religious bigot.
...wonder how he got along with Sandusky at PSU...
No, just suspicious, hence why I stay home or carry when out and about.
“I am a homophobe and proud of it.”
The word ‘homophobe’ is a misnomer.
Several years ago some department at LSU did a study and found that heterosexual men were not actually ‘homophobic’.
The heterosexual men were disgusted by homosexuals because of the deviant behavior in public and the things that homosexuals do to each other.
They could have saved the money that they spent on this ‘study’ if they had asked me. That is the thought that I have held for my entire life. Homosexuals are simply disgusting, period. There is no ‘phobia’ involved.
You won’t see overt offinse. But, when he comes back from the first “scrum & dog-pile”, he will start beating the “I’ve been offended” drum.
Even if a 3rd-string tackle late in the game calls him “nancy-boy”...the media and NFL will be “all in”. That will translate to the “locker-room” and his perception of “subtle slights and offense” that will be equivalent to “He snapped everyone else’s ass with a towel but not mine! He’s a bigot!”
Dungy’s right, this will not end well.
Correct I am not afraid of anything (per se), they just disgust me and I am overly tired of PC bull excrement in all its forms.
Yes, see my 33.
Homo = human, phobe = denoting a person having a fear or dislike of what is specified.
Yes I was being flippant.
They know their move from St Louis is inevitable.
...to where...?
Ironically, maybe LA where they came from.
No, it's because Sam is an annoying bug eyed, carp faced, no talent whiner.
Being gay doesn't help is game play and his ugly, "just got rear-ended" look that's plastered all over the sports shows doesn't help either.
People like ass kickers, not ass takers.
Back to Los Angeles is the speculation.
