JULY 19, 2014 A Thor Subject The comics industry grapples with attracting women readers. By Jim Geraghty
The surprises came in a trio: First, Marvel Comics announced that the character of Thor, based upon the Norse God of Thunder, would become a woman. The second surprise was the venue in which the switch was announced ABCs feminine-minded daytime talk show The View but perhaps that was predictable, considering that Marvel and ABC Television are both owned by Disney.
But the third, and biggest, surprise is that anyone thought this was a good idea.
This is not She-Thor, senior writer Jason Aaron said in a Marvel release. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But its unlike any Thor weve ever seen before.
The She-Thor reference is meant to address the complaint that some of comics most high-profile heroines are just female versions of previously existing male heroes Supergirl, Batgirl, Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Namorita . . . characters that seem derivative and superfluous in the hands of the wrong creative team.
Comic-book characters go through all kinds of seemingly permanent changes broken backs, retirements, deaths only to return to normal within a few months or years which is often a sign that a new editor or writer has taken the helm, or that the dramatic change flopped with readers. For what its worth, Marvel insists Thors new womanhood isnt a brief experiment.

This is a stupid idea. Making the Falcon the new Captain America I’m ok with, but this is stupid. Marvel has always had really strong female characters. Wasp was the captain of the Avengers for a long time, and in the X-men, at least old school X-men, you have Jean Grey (Phoenix), Shadowcat, Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Mystique, Emma Frost...
How about they just write good stories and not crap that is just a vehicle for them to draw woman with enormous boobs in string bikinis running around with swords.
*yawn*
I think that all that comic book crap only affects the “adult children” in the 18 - 55 age group.
Part of the problem with nerd culture becoming popular culture is that nerd news is big now but people commenting on it know nothing of the history of these nerdy stories. This isn’t the first time Thor has become a woman. He’s even been a frog and an alien. Owing to how they structured the Thor powers to work (they come with the hammer) body swapping Thor has been a common plot. Sometimes played for comedy, sometimes played for drama, sometimes played for an obvious lack of ideas in the writing room. And like convenience store burritos this too shall pass.
What if Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor had found the hammer of Thor?
If you look at comics from several decades ago, you will find that the female version of Thor storyline has been done before.
Marvel has plenty of female characters and some of them have sold fairly well. The problem (and this is the same over at DC) is that if an upstart new creation starts to eclipse established characters considered to be the core of the brand then upper management has awful plot developments intentionally inserted to reign them in.
Were a radio station to plug a band on a label owned by the station without disclosing the conflict of interest, they would be subject to fines.
Funny how it's okay in the television world.
Now that IS calling the Apocalypse!
The “comic” conventions don’t even have comic books for sale these days. They are dominated by adults in trick or treat costumes, getting the autographs of the actors who portrayed the characters in the MOVIES and TV shows based on books and comics.
This “nerd chic” is a hipster marketing plan, it isn’t genuine fandom.
I’m Scandinavian and am offended. This is like turning Mohammed into Ms Mahammyd. Or something.
just walk away
if you’re white... they don’t Cardiff you’re offended
I’m still waiting on the martin luther king story starring Elton John or some equally effeminate white male
Oh wait...that's Miranda Frost.
Never mind.
Tranny-thor
bump
Stupid. And a bit of an insult to those of us of Scandinavian extraction.
So, rewrite centuries of culture instantaneously for personal politically correct gratification? LOSE/LOSE...and they will lose. $$$...
