You know of course that we could never really be friends Men and women cant be friends, because the sex part always gets in the way.
Thats from the 1989 romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally. But you already knew that. Its a famous movie and a famous line, and in the 25 years since Nora Ephrons classic swept the box office, people still love this hilarious and heartwarming tale of true friendship melting into true love.

I think there’s some kind of unwritten rule in which men take women to chick flicks during the courting period. Once married, women now have to endure whatever film the man wants to see. Or go see their chick flicks on “girls night out” occasions.
I’m of the mind that if you have to endure something yucky, you may as well pick something that’s “good for you”.
While not quite a romantic comedy, intelligent women seem to find the BBC mutipart “Pride and Prejudice” to have a comedic element to it.
And, at least it’s based on great literature. Unlike Hollywood, BBC doesn’t mock its great authors and authoresses often. It is also watchable and inoffensive. (An important plot point where the younger daughter shacks up with a rake was handled in a way that my younger children didn’t pick up on what exactly happened. Just as important, it was shown to be a complete disaster, where the character has to go to the land of fictitious British character rehabilitation . . . Australia. I hope she said “hello” to the Micawbers and little Emily.)
Agreed - Korean movies and TV shows are great. Thy’ve picked up the ball that Hollywood dropped and run a long way with it.
K-Drama’s rock
and almost always without the perverted stuff
bump
Thanks for the reminder on Doris Day.
Just finished watching “Bird on a Wire” on cable movies. Romantic, comedy, action with Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn. Nice enough movie. Had been long enough ago when I last watched it that I forgot most of it!
I was just going to write a similar post on my turn to Korean dramas because of similar dismay, when I happened across yours. I concur wholeheartedly for the exact same reason you listed.
The last two I watched that were tremendous were, My Love From Another Star, funny, sweet, involving and lingering. The best romantic comedy actress I have ever seen is Jun Ji-hyun. In That Winter, the Wind Blows, the cinematography was excellent, I love playing the soundtrack and Jo Insung is the most expressive actor I have ever seen, he blows away any of the young men these days.
The only problem is, I haven’t found another to while away the time, that would give me pleasure and distract me from current events.
Any suggestions?
First I’m going to have to do whatever people do to see things on television. I don’t even own a tv much less understand how one would arrange to see the Jamie and Claire Show.
Hollywood has no provision for the mature woman actor. In Britain they're better about it. Look at Maggie Smith, she was an absolute babe in her early years, but has never been more popular than recently in the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey where she gets all the great lines.
My favs are ‘Move Over Darling’, (a ‘remake’ of the Marilyn Monroe-Dean Martin film that was cancelled due to her death) and ‘That Touch of Mink’ with Cary Grant.
Most forget what a good dramatic actress she was.
See ‘Midnight Lace’ with Rex Harrison.
To set her mood in a scene from ‘Midnight Lace’, she relived scenes in her mind from her first marriage to an abusive husband where he kicked her in the stomach while she was expecting and beat her until she was almost died.
Her tears were real. She became so shaken that they had to postpone production for several days.
She was one of the best criers in the business- next to Margaret O’Brien.
She could do it all. She is a true American treasure- the likes of which we will never see again.
Sandra Fluke, Lena Dunham, Sara Gilbert, Margaret Cho and all their new age sisters.
Just take a moment and watch almost any commercial. The white male is always made to look like the buffoon.
A few wrinkles and some grey hair look good on a 55 year old woman. She looks like a parody of a young woman, not a young woman nor an attractive mature woman.
That was exactly my reaction. “The Joker!”
My teevee is on TCM almost all the time. Good combo you picked there, and Specer Tracy / K. Hepburn did a few; Cary Grant, even "African Queen" with Bogart and Hepburn.
I never could get through "Gone with the Wind." By halfway through it, I'm always yelling, "run, Rhett, run, don't look back, just run!!" (The book was just as bad.) But then, I'm one of those unusual women who prefers watching football to chick flicks.
“I liked Frank Tashlins Girl Cant Help It much better (of course that had a great soundtrack to boost it).”
SOUNDTRACK??? How about a gal named Jayne Mansfield??!! ;)
The modern ‘Romantic Comedy’ was essentially invented by Woody Allen with ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘Manhattan’. It’s been downhill since.
