These incredible pictures show the moment an elephant who was held in chains and beaten and abused for fifty years cried as he was released to freedom.
Raju the elephant was left bleeding from spiked shackles and living on hand-outs from passing tourists after he was captured and tied up by his owner.
But, after 50 years of torture, the animal cried tears of relief after he was rescued by a wildlife charity in a daring midnight operation fittingly on American Independence Day.

The poor animal. Thank goodness for these wonderful people who saved him.
Terrible, horrible story but I can’t stand it when human qualities are projected on to animals.
Animals should not live in chains. Nor should people. Literally or figuratively.
Anthropomorphism goes back for thousands of years................
Maybe he’s crying because he has Stockholm syndrome and he wants to go back home.
If you have to keep an animal in chains, no matter if it’s a dog or an elephant, then you shouldn’t be ‘keeping’ the animal...................
We project human qualities onto animals because we have yet to learn how to project animal qualities onto animals.
Someone should die for treating an animal that way.

He’s so skinny I’ll bet he is at least a ton underweight.
According to the article, there may have been upwards of 27 different ‘owners’ over the years. That’s changing hands every two years or less..........

That’s exact the story I thought of. We started donating to the Elephant Sanctuary from the story.
Amazing video, almost too hard to watch. But the prologue from PBS was heartbreaking..........
Is that what you saw? I saw two different stories; the first being the violation of God's trust in mankind for the proper stewardship of the animals he provided us and the second being mankind answering God's call to rescue this poor animal........
Elephants are indeed intelligent and highly social animals. One could even make the argument that elephants exhibit more characteristics of what God hoped for in mankind than what man is exhibiting today........
Put those chains right back on the sub-humans responsible, and let them beg until death!
