It's been clear for some time that the iPad has taken the enterprise by storm as employees tote it to work and companies buy fleets of them. But Apple's PC, the Mac, has never been as dominant in the workplace, until now, according to new research from long-time Microsoft rival, VMware.
VMware queried 376 IT professionals and found that they are increasingly being asked to buy and/or support Macs in the enterprise by employees who want Macs, not Windows machines.
"Microsoft Windows has dominated enterprise desktops for close to three decades but it appears its reign is coming to an end. As BYOPC ["Bring Your Own PC"] and BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] continue to transform the enterprise, Macs have become a popular and preferred option compared to Windows PCs," says Erik Frieberg, VP of Marketing, End-User Computing, VMware, in the report.

I posted it just to show that Apple's desktop percentage is very low. Yes, all the beautiful people have the glowing Apple logo displayed when they open up their laptop and Apple fans are even more loyal and vociferous than Green Bay Packer fans, but the actual percentage of USERS is very low.
IF Apple could run the good CAD programs and IF their prices were competitive then I might consider the hassle of teaching this old dog a new OS. However, the last time I tried was 20 years ago and I decided that it was NOT worth the effort.

So, your beef is that the IT department where you work wouldn't let you bring in a Mac, GOOD! Who knows how well your machine is patched (and an explosive device and how much malware as well as viruses you might have? No, forget the safety of the entire network, and therefore the entire company, you want to be able to bring in any device and as any self respective IT department told you, No, Hell no. Guess what, all it takes is one And now you're mad. I hear there are some sort of Doctors that can help you with that.
If IT departments were any good at what they do we wouldn't still need them.

First, let's add the grains of salt: This survey was a mere 376 people, hardly big enough to showcase the whole world of corporate PC use. It was commissioned by a company that is trying to sell software that competes with Microsoft. VMware wants companies to buy what's known as "virtual desktops," where users download Windows and Windows apps over the network on any device they want, such as a Mac. They would do this instead of buying new Windows PCs. That said, VMware uncovered some interesting nuggets. Employees are asking for Macs, not just iPads. 73% of respondents said they are supporting Macs because users are asking for them. Only 40% said they are using them to run applications that only run on the Mac.

You then cherry pick comments from the article which you claim support your contentions, but those quotations actually misrepresent the intent of the article. You go on to ignore statistical modeling and the validity of statistical sampling as being representative of the whole. It demonstrates more of your ignorance and your agenda. Let's look at the lede paragraphs of the article instead of cherry picking the balancing items the author included to supposedly counter the lede which you quoted.

No, learn to read, Lx. That's more projection on your part. Employing fraudulent data is just the kind of tactic I'd expect you'd use to skew the results to provide the outcome you want. The article says who they polled: Not Apple. . . They polled 376 enterprise IT professionals.
Validation by replication of data is as valid in statistics as it is in any other discipline. You ignore the fact that the VMWare findings have been independently confirmed in other polls (that's the correct spelling—see editing does take skill), where similar finders were revealed. Here is a chart of the results of a poll from Jamf Software of 300 enterprise IT professionals:
These data are very close to VMWare's findings. I could show you others, including articles from Networkworld Magazine (now Networkworld.com), Infoworld and CIO Magazine and lots of other sources from the last couple of years, but I know you'd blow those off, too.
Did you notice the second reason that these IT professionals in the Jamf study cited for supporting Macs in the Enterprise? A full 35% of these professional IT managers cited the reason was they made their workers more productive! If I still were a CEO, believe you me, that would make me sit up and take notice. More productivity for the same cost per employee hour? I'd have my CIO in my office the next day. Initial acquisition cost for Apple hardware be damned. Almost every independent TCO study has shown Macs are less expensive. . . and require less IT management time per machine.

Though Macs often have a higher up-front price than many business-class PCs, Macs are usually believed to have a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) due to lower support costs. The TCO has only gotten better as Mac prices have dropped in comparison to PCs in the past few years. That's a business reason to use Macs in business.

Your opening salvo about your 20 years in IT and saying you knew of "no Macs" in business environments is WHAT really started this, because in light of the many articles on this very topic in industry press, you could NOT be so ignorant. Somehow you either unprofessionally don't bother reading anything in your own field or, (whisper it) you don't work in IT, to have missed the reporting on this trend. Something just doesn't ring true. So much you wrote does not agree with the reality that is reported in the industry press, or my own 35 years of experience. Ergo, you are the lone outlier. . . or liar. When you resorted to multiple and several ad hominems against everyone who dared challenge you, it became proof positive you were a blowhard, bereft of facts to support your contentions. If you were competent, you would know these facts of your field, you'd read the periodicals in your field, and be you'd be proactive in preparing for that day when your precious CIO announces your network will have to support Apple products, so that you can step forward, prostrate yourself at his feet, and humbly say, "As Ye have spoken, so shall IT be immediately accomplished, my Lord and Master, I know exactly how to do as you bid," and obsequiously bowing, back out his exalted, infallible presence.
Oh, I'm sure you're proud of your ITT or Kaplan College Microsoft Network Engineer Certificate. I know you worked hard for it. But it isn't the end all and be all. You have a toolbox of Microsoft hammers. . . and to you, everything looks like a Microsoft nail that needs MS pounding. the problem is, Lx, that some people and businesses would prefer to use screws and hammers just won't do. Screws are more productive, safer, and in the long run, require less maintenance. The world is moving on and you need to move with it, anticipating those moves. . . add some screwdrivers to your toolbox.
You blithely ignore that the Mac, out of the box, can do a lot more than you know about. As a competent IT professional, it's your business to know. That's why my Mac runs OSX, UNIX, iOS (just for the heck of it), Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows XP, two Linux variants, and on an external drive, I keep an installation of Windows 95, AmigaDOS (so I can run Mand2000), a Commodore64 emulator (again, just for the heck of it), and THEOS (because on of my clients has a legacy system that runs a terminal based database using THEOS, and I occasionally have to brush-up my recollection of its archaic utilities.).
Surprise, Lx, I have recommended PCs, Microsoft, and Windows solutions to my clients when that was the best solution. I support them too. Sorry, your armchair psycho psychoanalysis goes boom. If you'd have bothered to read, I told you I'm a business and cross-platform platform consultant. I make far more money from my Windows based computer clients than I do from my Mac based ones. Why? Because the Mac based ones simply don't have as many problems they can't handle themselves. You are the blind ideologue, who would choke before you'd recommend a Mac. It's funny. Mac users invariably these days were once or still are Windows users. They are the equivalent of bilingual language speakers and sometimes trilingual, if they use the Terminal for UNIX. Yet we are called ignorant by the monolingual, single language Windows users who know nothing but Windows and have nothing to compare it with.
We, who made a decision to go with the minority platform are referred to as Mac sheep, or Apple lemmings, crowd followers hoping to look cool as we buy a computer used by only 11% of the computer users in the United States, by the people who buy and use the computer used by 89% of everyone else.

I sincerely don't think it's the people who have deliberately chosen NOT to do what everyone else is doing. We Mac users have chosen the path less traveled. That does not make us iSheep, iLemmings, or iStupid. What we are now is experienced on both platforms. . . and better positioned than you Windows only users to judge the positives and negatives of both platforms. Our minds, unlike yours and your ilk, are not closed. We took a chance to do something different, instead of the same frustrating, irritating system that got in our way instead of working with us.
Yes, Lx, computers are just tools. You just fail to understand that there are qualitative differences in tools. I'm a craftsman as well as the other things I've mentioned. I won Mechanics Illustrated Magazine's Golden Hammer Award in 1978. I am willing to pay ten - fifteen times more for a quality tool than one I can buy at Walmart that will just "make-do." I build museum quality ship models. I want tools that stay sharp, that don't slip. Tools that help me do my work, not hinder me by constantly need attention before I can use them. In your work on your car reconstruction, do you buy Craftsman and Snap-on, or do you go get a wrench set from a flea market truck? The Mac is a tool that is superior to Windows machines that improves my productivity. It truly is that simple.
You don't accomplish what I've accomplished in my life by living in a basement playing computers. I have many interests, have raised two successful daughters, have a wonderful 2 and 1/2 year old granddaughter, have a beautiful girlfriend, own multiple rental properties, and have enjoyed a varied and successful business background. I've been personal friends with people who've who ranged from those who slept under bridges to one who occupied the Oval Office (may he rest in conservative peace). One of the things that has helped me accomplish everything in the latter part of my working life using is a computer that works WITH me rather than using one I have to work ON. I've been there, and frustratingly done that. . . for far too long. One cardiac infarction later, I decided I ain't going to do that any more. Anything that caused me more irritation than it was worth wasn't worth keeping around. Personal use of Windows certainly fit that bill. I'm getting very close to telling my Windows clients to find another IT consultant. Working on and with Windows just ain't been fun for years now. I reached retirement age last month and I'm seriously considering it.
The Mac, the iPad, and the iPhone ecosystem computers are that computer system. They ARE fun to work with.
Apple equipment is not a "cult," a "religion," a "fetish," or a "lifestyle." It's merely an exceedingly excellent tool that helps me accomplish what I want to do with out overtly irritating me. It's a tool I enjoy using.
A 2007 CRN Tech News OSX vs. Windows Vista Review, although a bit dated, and Windows has gotten somewhat better, said it quite accurately:

If PC’s are the be all and end all of computerdom, then why don’t these detractors present well reasoned and supported reasons why PC’s are to be preferred, rather than spout nonsense about Apple products?
Why don’t they post articles that extoll the virtues of PC’s rather than disrupt ones of interest to Apple users?

Strangely this is a Small Government freedom loving forum, yet the PC IT guys operate as a totally managed system that declares all their clients are to stupid to fend for themselves, therefore we must rule over them to protect them from themselves.
