Ultimate you need to set a calorie limit that is below the number of calories you use on a daily basis.

Read the book “Wheat Belly”.
The Atkins diet puts your body in a state of ketosis, so it burns your body fat. This diet doesn’t forbid carbohydrates, but allows you to tak enough protein to maintain muscle mass and only cuts out the proportion of carbohydrates needed to lose weight.
If only it wouldn’t kill your kidney and joints...
So will a high fat low card diet. Calories be damned.
One thing that was kind of funny when I lost the weight, EVERYONE loved the way I looked, but most everyone was trying to get me to eat crappy food, knowing my diet was working great.
I’m surrounded by health nuts whose nagging increased the cravings!
This is, of course, why India traditionally had large amounts of obese vegetarian Hindus wandering around.

Still need a good balance. Protein is a big part of our natural diet - movements and "medical" studies have tried to make us cut back on meats, etc., and that has increased the consumption of carbs. Too many carbs is a big factor in much of the increased instances of diabetes, not to mention obesity.
I once heard a football coach talking about the athletes getting back to training camp and needing to shed a few pounds. He made the statement, "If you want to lose weight, you need to experience hunger". I find it to be one of the enduring truths. Even the ancient Romans said that one should get up from every meal while still feeling a bit of hunger - and old timers are even more believable than what you read on the internet.....
Looks like the media is starting to figure out what MILLIONS OF AMERICANS already have - and that food “recommendations” from government is TOTALLY POLITICIZED.
Now that the mechanisms of how carbs are processed are being understood, and the monster-grain that wheat now is, people can make INTELLIGENT DECISIONS for themselves, such as the following:
1) Stay off wheat - it is now poison due to hybridization, it is not your grandmother’s wheat, not even close.
2) Stay light on other carbs - some, yes, but they turn straight into body fat if you eat a lot.
3) Meat, vegetables, nuts, and other stuff - have at it!!
This isn’t actually a fad diet, this is what people have eaten since the beginning. If you look up a book called the Maker’s diet, it’s very similar, it’s a christian book.
Recent studies have shown that all calories aren’t the same, so taking in less and burning more doesn’t necessarily work. I struggled for a few years, and then tried the fad low carb diet. It worked, and it worked quick. My cholesterol went down and the arthritis in my feet disappeared. My skin isn’t so dry anymore either.
I think the new and improved Weight Watchers is really good.
The key to keeping the weight off after the diet is to limit carb intake to one or two servings a day.....
Sugars and Carbs, does not matter if the sugar is natural as in fruit it is still a double issue. High sugar fruits drive up your TRIS, and they pack on pounds.
I’m not much of a sweet eater, but high sugar fruit was a big part of my diet. My TRIS were 300+. When I went on my son’s type 2 diabetic diet, eliminated the high sugar fruits, they dropped 200 pts in just a few months. My TRIS were higher than my LDL—130. HDL is 75-85. Weight started down faster than I thought it would, I now hold a normal weight, which I’ve never been able to do since I started having kids. I am Hypothyroid, so weight has been a big issue for 30 yrs. I was never in the high over weight area, just the usual 20 lb to much.
Portion control is a big part of a type 2 diabetics diet. It lets you eat the things you like, just maybe not the amount you would. It is heavy on the Protein side. Low on the Carb/Sugar side. But it has to be a life style change you are willing to live with. With those other foods being a ‘treat’ item for special occasions.
Hubby on the other hand is a big sweet/carb (Bread-potato) eater, and he has to take 2 cholesterol meds, and his HDL is the PITS.
Why people do not get this is beyond me? You do not have to stop eating any foods. Portion control is the key to healthy diet.
Eat a - Protein / Fibrous Carb / Starchy Carb - at every meal.

This is the easiest way to figure how many calories you need to maintain a weight level. Diets are fads because people do not make them LIFESTYLE changing.

Nah, it can’t be that simple... we have books and teevee shows to sell!
I hate to refute that, but I can fast for a week and lose nothing. I’ve tried it over and again, and this is while working as a nurse, so I am not sitting around doing nothing. For another 5 years I ate less than 1000 calories per day and could not lose weight. So, calorie counting can be very frustrating.
Fats and protein fill you up. In fact, if you dawdle over your eating of those fats and protein, you will eat less of them, and if active, you’ll have a better chance to lose weight. Dropping calories alone makes the body fear you are fasting or not taking enough. It wants to store more fat (its default setting), and if you are eating more carbs than fats and proteins, that is more likely to happen. Most of what people eat today of carbs are processed foods, as well, and not the fresh fruits and veggies.
