Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

Bill and Tom have made dozens of music CDs and left them lying around in the car, so few of them actually play.

Since they seem to enjoy turning once functional CD's into coasters, suggest that they can speed the process by getting one of those sleeves that fit over your sunvisor... You know, the ones with all the slots to place your CD's in. The ones that everyone installs with the slots on the side that will face the windshield when the visor is lowered. So you can leave them exposed to the emanations from that glowing gasball in the sky... ;-)

Call it a science project examining how long the dye coating on various manufacturers CD's last when exposed to broad spectrum photon bombardment. There's probably a government grant available if applied for with the proper wording. Why, they might even get invited to the Whitehut for an upclose with the _resident... ;-)

It’s for camping, and being light on the landscape.

Basically, you pick up twigs and sticks along the way, and burn them up completely as you prepare your meal. The heat produces electricity, which operates a fan, which makes the camp stove a small incinerator. There’s very little ash.

Excess electricity is delivered in the form of a USB port, which can be used to recharge a cell-phone, camera, or LED light.

After camp is struck, you leave nothing behind except a handful of ash, which will be recycled.

Great idea about the solar cooker. Maybe we can try it with the Cub Scouts. We have plenty of available CDs!

For some folks, using a brain is a tough job. It gives them headaches so all they can think of is getting drunk to ease the pain. Most of them are Walmartians but there could be some Kmartians scattered amongst them.

Be aware as you shop that not everyone is playing with a full basket, and often, those earbuds are tuned to one mantra: “Breathe in. Breathe out.”
