Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

OK, ganag. I have a friend who has a problem, and the only people I know of that can be relied upon in a pinch are Freepers (and some ex-Freepers on Facebook and other sites,)and I wonder if any of you would be interested in helping.

My friend, Busdaddy, was the victim of a burglary 10 days ago, and among the other things that were taken were his two hand guns. One was a Ruger .357 revolver that he bought in Germany when he was in the MPs there, and the other was a gift from his son, Abrams Scout. This one was a Springfield 1911 .45.

His son lives in Colorado Springs and has quite an extensive gun collection, so he offered to send his dad a replacement gun until such time as Busdaddy could get a CCW and buy a replacement. He is scheduled to take the CCW class on the 17th.

Abrams Scout checked the UPS website to see if it was legal to ship a hand gun and if so, what the restrictions were so he could comply. He then took the pistol to his local UPS store, and all of a sudden, he was surrounded by police, and questioned about the handgun and who it was being sent to and why.

Obviously, a gun control freak in that particular store panicked and called the local constabulary. The handgun didn’t get sent, and Abrams Scout went back home. About an hour later, the local law engorgement officers showed up at his door, wanting to see his gun collection. He asked to see their warrant and there was none.

SO. I’m asking all who are willing to either email UPS.com and tell them you are unhappy with a store in Colorado Springs, or boycott UPS altogether.

I am going to do both, but I’m also going to email the local constabulary there and tell them what I think of their Gestapo tactics.

In the meantime, I’m open to other suggestions, if anyone has any.

The wasps in our eaves were not paper wasps, but I do know what you are talking about. Lots of farmers left the wasp nests if there was any way to do it; otherwise, they relocated the nests very carefully.

With that one exception, I have no mercy on wasps. I’m too susceptible to their stings. And honey bees? I’m outta here...I carry an Epi-Pen.

He may have screwed up. You cannot ship a handgun across state lines, you need to use an FFL.

pretty sure it has to be shipped from one FFL holder to another, if not... i'm afraid he's screwed.

Thanks for that! I will bring it to his attention. I don’t know what an FFL is, but I was thinking his option was to take it to a national gun store and ask them to ship it.

I don’t feel so uptight, now, with that bit. I think I knew it but it was buried. Thanks again!

Thanks, Chode!

I suppose I’ll hear that at least once more today, but that just means that I’ll be able to remember it when I need it.

It means, then, the he could have sent it UPS if had been within state lines, yes?

Thanks again!

not to my knowledge... i believe all gun shipments have to be btwn Federal Firearms License holders but since UPS is a private company it might vary state to state

but i don't think so, ATF is extremely anal when it comes to that

The point to be made, to the UPS and others, is that when a customer asks what the regulations are, it’s because he wants to follow, not violate them.

A helpful agency, concerned about its customers, and its business relationships, would have explained that, hopefully on the initial phone call.

There should a corollary to Murphy’s Law, that when the Federal Government grows to extend its tentacles into every nook and orifice of your life, its agents become increasingly underpaid, under-trained, and incompetent.

yup, governmental help/benefit is inversely proportional to it's cost

But, of course, the same federal government that cannot save federal government emails between federal government employees in the federal government tax offices, the federal government EPA, and the federal government immigration services can get a federal government investigation started within one hour after a firearm is placed in a private company’s envelope to be mailed between two private individuals ....

Yep, it's too big to do anything but fail.

And by fail, I mean to fulfill its chartered purpose to the citizenry; to be a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Does that mean I needed to use an FFL to ship that crate of AR-15s to the guy in Idaho last week? Darn.

Federal agents at my door in 3 . . 2 . . 1.

Nah. Only if you were foolish enough to dabble in ones that had serial numbers on them.

Er. Yeah. If you are shipping across state lines.

UNLESS you are Obama. Then you can ship machine guns to drug lords and they will give you a Nobel Peace Prize.
