I have ridden Vail Pass many times and am shocked he rode it averaging 22 mph. It is super steep in places- like I don't go much more than single digits in one part in particular. It's like a wall in front of you. Wow. Impressed.

We did see Floyd Landis do it as part of the Copper Triangle but were not able to watch him except pedaling away from us as we manned the aid station. The USA pro challenge had the ITT up Vail pass a couple of years ago but they stopped just before the really steep parts. As it turns into a bike path and is just off the shoulder of I 70 in sections, I think it was for the safety of the riders.

I once raced on a road course had one good climb and some short hills. I was with a group of riders that had been dropped and we ended up organizing a chase and got back to the leaders. The final part of the race was a big group of about 35 or 40 riders smoking through some rollers in the valley heading to the finish. We were flying ...FLYING, I tell ya!

I don't think I was ever in a group that big going that fast. The race was 88 miles and the time was 3hr23min. I was blown away that we only averaged about 27mph. When I tally that against speeds the pros achieve I am in awe.
