I need help and advice from my fellow freepers. The situation is this: recently, son and wife had a baby. Her health care covered their family and all expenses, but they couldn't afford a baby sitter, even on their combined salaries so she had to quit, so son quit a job which he loved and they moved to be near us, He lined up a job relatively quickly, but it is seasonal and no benefits. It's meant to tide them over until he gets a better job. Baby is past due for her checkups (thank goodness she's healthy). So son and wife applied for the Chip program to get health care for baby, but are told they are making too LITTLE. So, the people at CHIP are referring them to Medicaid! Son is fit to be tied! Neither of them wants to go on Medicaid, but worry about the baby being covered.
So today, son learns that he may have a shot at a very good paying job - with benefits, but he doesn't know when the opening will come up and they may have to go on Medicaid in the meantime until those benefits kick in - assuming he gets the job. My question is - and this is what he's worried about - if he gets this job, and they are forced onto Medicaid, can he drop the Medicaid and go with the company healthcare package? I am reading that it's hard to get off of it?? This is what he is afraid of - that there is no going back if they go on Medicaid.
Please, if anybody knows, I would appreciate input from my Free Republic friends.

Actually, it’s grandMA! LOL!
Ignore those with unkind words. I am always shocked by what our fellow Freepers say to one another!! Families should stick together. You have already been blessed by having a healthy baby, which I am sure u know.
Looks like in PA the physician plays a big roles in determining if they can apply for medicaid.
Son and wife are taking baby to the pediatrician who was my son’s doctor from the time he was born. But baby comes first and they should find out, before jumping into medicaid, if the doc takes medicaid patients. If not, the suggestions you gave are worth checking into. Thank you!
One last thought to consider...and anyone can correct me if I am mistaken...
but I thought under 0bamacare, if you took Medicaid and then got off it later...you had to pay it back.
Oh GREAT! Just what they need! I’ll be checking on that one and relaying he information to son and wife. I hope he gets that new job!
I don’t understand your scruples about SCHIP vs. Medicaid. Both are government programs. What is the big difference?
It is “hard to get off Medicaid?” What does that mean?
The baby needs to see a good pediatrician. I would not have any hesitation about signing a baby up for Medicaid if that is all she qualifies for.
check your local area for free medical clinics or call yr county Health Department for suggestions
Excellent suggestion!! We had friends who utilized these reduced cost services, for their kids, when they were with young ones...and in between jobs or working jobs without benefits.
Maybe you can pitch in to cover the cost (of immunizations), or babysit...or both, until they get on their feet with jobs that have benefits. Wishing you — and your son’s new little family — all the best ;)
So they can't afford the child they made, So Grandma, Baby Sit, Why is it our problem to pay for?
Thanks iowamark. My sister in law had her kids on Chip and when she got a job with benefits, she and her husband transferred her kids over to that. I was not so sure about Medicaid. I guess I am just not familiar with how these things work, and son is afraid that they could get trapped into something they can’t get out of. I’ll be checking out the options that others on this list suggested. You are right; baby should have the care she needs to stay healthy.
Doing much of the above. THank you for the good wishes. Things happen unexpectedly. They will get through this! We are helping where we can, and so is DIL’s mom.
I believe the issue is not that they get booted off medicaid by too much income - they certainly will be, but that the govt will thereafter require they go on obamacare insurance and there are no other options.
>>if you took Medicaid and then got off it later...you had to pay it back<<
That has to be funniest thing I’ve read all day.
Pay what back? The Government can’t even find Lerner’s “lost” Emails, how would they find out you took you Kid the “Medicaid” Doctor because he had a Boo Boo?
This is how Urban Legends are born.
Each state has its own medicaid requirements. I see nothing wrong with them applying for it, I would rather help them out than all those coming across the borders right now. You and they have paid in taxes. During some hard times, get the help.
Where I live the Catholic Church runs a service called New Beginnings for moms and babies. It’s managed by the local Catholic hospital. Is there a Catholic hospital near you?
When he gets the job and the coverage notify the county Medicaid office that he has other coverage and go to a real doctor.
Well, aren’t you just a ray of sunshine! Bless your heart!
You are a tiny bit cranky this evening...ain’t cha?
Thank you!! That is EXACTLY the issue! Son was concerned that, if they were put on medicaid, that they would not be able to get off of it! He and wife don’t want any part of Obamacare, and would gladly pay for the doctor themselves if they were in a position to do so right now. They don’t want any part of the government dole! Son will gladly pay into a healthcare program provided through his employer.
Please pray that son gets the job he’s after. He was raised that a man works and supports his family. He wants to do just that.
Of course they can.
Up to now they (the flying monkeys of the Omugabe regime) have been able to do pretty much whatever they please. And get away with it.
Nothing that is evident suggests that might change in the near future.
Remember, also that Medicaid for anyone with any real paper worth, or with prospects of future worth, that worth, in whatever form is mortgaged to the Medicaid system, subject to future reimbursement. With interest? Nobody knows.
70,000 pages of regulations, and growing, is not yet enough.
