She sponged. Others worked and produced clothing and other basic goods. She made efficient use of such goods, but aside from a small amount of gardening there is no evidence that she produced anything.
She lived off others in an effort to show people that THEY consume too much. Meanwhile, she did nothing but consume the work of others.

Well whatever hope she enjoyed it and got something useful out of it in her life. Money is for using and not to love it. But to shun it completely is not smart. Why cause unnecessary hardship and lack?

I’d guess about a third of the US population is in a similar boat - no money of their own, but plenty to be had from the government.
