Two senators unveiled a bipartisan plan Wednesday to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes for the first time in more than two decades, pitching the proposal as a solution to Congress struggle to pay for highway and transit programs.
The plan offered by Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., would raise the 18.4-cents-a-gallon federal gas tax and 24.4-cents-a-gallon diesel tax by 12 cents each over the next two years, and then index the taxes to keep pace with inflation.
The plan also calls for offsetting the tax increases with other taxes cuts.

California leads the way, again. We’re scheduled for a state increase of 12c by next year.
And how much have the sponsors and the rest of the political thieves stolen from the highway trust fund for other purposes?
The ads against Corker just write themselves...Corker wishes to raise your taxes by 12 cents per gallon. Corker is tone-deaf regarding the people he represents.
Just where the hell do these pompous asses think we’re going to get the 12 cents a gallon to pay for that increase?Since the demRats thoroughly wrecked the economy.
I guess they think I can just go to my Employer and order him to increase My pay enough to cover the increase.
God I Hate demRats.
Plan is to “settle” for less.
Another illegal revenue raising bill originating in the Senate. Ho hum...
Yeah, this will help the economy. Everything will be going up in price as a result and consumer spending will go down. Companies will not sit back and absorb this as their shipping and receiving costs go up; it will be past on to you and I. So, essentially, we will be taxed two and three times over as companies struggle to survive and we as consumers struggle to make ends meet.
Other taxes cuts? Are there no editors?
The republican led house and senate here in Washington have been pushing hard for the 12 cent gas tax ($1 Billion/ annually) for the last two years. the only reason it hasn’t gotten through is that the public and most of the elected are fed up with WSDOT mismanagement since 95% of this money would go to them for their mega projects and highway repairs. The local agencies (cities and counties) would only get about 5% of this money.
I have attended numerous public hearings on this matter and WSDOT is allowed to testify how broke they are and how badly they need this money although 90% of their system is rated as excellent!
There will never be enough money for incompetent, corrupt and selfish politicians.
Obama says energy costs must be made to skyrocket. Corker doubles down.
With millions of people living at the margins of financial stability, cutting and scrimping wherever they can, what happens to businesses that depend on their trade when people are squeezed even more and they have to tighten their belts further to pay the Corker Gas Tax?
Yeh like gas is not high enough already.
Did some research. He got this rated as “not a tax increase” so he could keep his pledge. Raising taxes 189 million in 2 years paid for by other special interest relief spread over 10 years. Sorry Bob, that’s an increase.
Don't forget to pronounce that as "shtruggle" for extra believability...
Argh! (on so many levels).
-We’re dealing with high gas prices already (which is driving down consumption, which is a big reason these clowns aren’t getting the gas tax revenue they “need” in the first place), and now these two clowns want to bleed us that much more at the pump? Argh!
-They’re going to ‘offset’ these tax increases by extending 50 different tax credits. Ah-huh. Somehow, I doubt most of us will enjoy the benefits of those tax credits at the pump. And, leave it to Congress critters to find a way to keep 50 different loopholes on the books.
So it’s okay when the government does this, but it’s BIG OIL and Halliburton are evil when the price goes up otherwise. This on top of Corbet’s PA tax hike is brutal.
