Yes If I remember correctly.a few years ago they took out part of his tongue and cheek. He didn’t broadcast for the Padres for a while ,then came back. you could tell his face was different. haven’t been watching BB the last 2 years so don’t know if he was still broadcasting for the Padres or ESPN.

My son attended a batting clinic with him a couple of years ago. My favorite line, regarding his loyalty/dedication to the Padres:

“Yeah. I wore a BROWN uniform for fourteen years.”

But I think much of the wisdom went over the kids’ heads.

“Chewing tobacco?”

Probably with his recent medical history and surgery.

A lot of these players started chewing tobacco when they were teenagers, more so in college or when they were drafted.

A couple of years ago we met a nice young man in his mid to late 30’s, and he was dying from oral, tongue and throat cancer. He had started chewing tobacco in highschool, and throughout his college days and a few years as a pro. He died a couple of months after we met him.

The first time I ever saw someone chewing tobacco in person (rather than on film/TV) was during BCT in '69.Many of the guys in my Company were southerners...Tennessee/Mississippi/Texas.

It was one of many new scenes I experienced during those 8 wonderful weeks.
